Regarding engine bay heat on 3200gt

Greetings gents!
I believe it is generally accepted that our engine bay gets very very hot.
I’ve seen many peoples posts,as well as with my own eyes, how bad this intense heat affects many parts on this engine.
So,I was thinking, how wrong would it be if we covered the 2 Turbos partying underneath, with turbo blankets and the exhaust manifolds with exhaust wrap?
Your opinions will be appreciated!
Think I’ll give it a try.
Has anyone else done it?
I would like to know the outcome.
Cheers!

Turbo blankets have always interested me although I worry about them setting fire! Perhaps wrongly.

Exhaust wrap I think is horrible stuff that rots away quite quickly.

The other options are ceramic coating of manifolds etc or that aluminium heat shielding that runs directly around a manifold, both quite expensive….?

Maybe look at the turbo blankets first???

I know what you mean as the hoses and connectors on my 3200 were all cooked by the heat!

You won't get a blanket to burn. Not a chance.

I took my Ghibli turbo round to Funk Autosport for one of our US members. He will make blankets custom.

Yes,I think the only possibility to start a fire is an oil leak on the blanket.
Ceramic coating is an interesting opinion but it think it’s a little overkill on a cast iron manifold that may crack?
I have a modified Audi with exhaust wrap on the headers&downpipe and a turbo blanket, that all hold up just fine even after 40.000km but I can’t recall the brand.
I have a little fear in me,I did it without second thought on the Audi, but it just isn’t the same to burn down a Maserati to be honest!
Yes I’m currently replacing all the connector sealings and hoses that have cracked due to heat and I’m not very eager doing it again!

Wow,this company does some serious work there!
Do they have an existing blanket pattern for our turbos?

I don’t recall experiencing anything as ‘intense’ as you describe in my 3 years of ownership. I had a bit of a problem with flaking paint but that was about it and that was easily sorted. Yes, it can get a bit warm under the bonnet but I wouldn’t be in a hurry to do anything that restricts the air flow around the turbos and prevents cooling … Maybe there’s a good reason why Maserati’s engineers didn’t install blankets or heat shields(?).

I am immediately wondering why Maserati didn't do more to contain the heat from the turbos and exhaust? I think the biggest worry here might be the turbos themselves running much hotter because of the extra insulation. I am especially thinking of the effect of the increased temperatures in the turbos on the coolant and engine oil which is circulated around the turbos? if it was ok to allow the turbos to get much hotter than they do why would they have oil lubricated them, and water cooled them? You may cool down the engine bay and vaporise your coolant and/or burn the oil?

The guys at Funk did explain it to me, in terms of increased efficiency and power. But I've forgotten most of it!

Yes,theoretically it keeps the heat inside, resulting in hotter exhaust gases, thus increasing in volume,so turbos build up pressure sooner, reducing turbo lag and threshold.
But I don’t know how much of a difference we could feel actually!
Sure we could benefit from lower air intake temperature.
But mr.David has a point, the turbo’s hot side could significantly affect the water&oil temperature.

Yep … it’s an engine out job to replace them and I hate to imagine what replacements would cost! … Does anyone know? Probably NLA from Maserati. Those turbos are a joy when they’re on song. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it, as they say!

I think most parts could be repaired-replaced (at turbo dedicated shops) on turbos if something goes bad.
Don’t think there is a need to seek one whole unit.

Good afternoon,
The engine bay does get hot; however having had the car for nearly 8 years now I had no issues. I did replace all the hoses when I first bought the car as they hadn’t been replaced since brand new, and they all look good.
Personally I woundn’t do any modifications, I would rather replace the hoses again in the future when needed..

Saw them advertised for euro 1500 for used part to 3300 something for a new turbo. Not touching mine although the thought crossed my mind
The cost of 2 new turbos is all a good average 3200 will fetch on the UK market, so if you had to fit 2 new ones the car would be beyond economical repair …
