Em, it’s only those in England that detest him. For me, he’s the most naturally talented player ever. There have been other great players but he was the one. He had a bit of the Pablo Escobar about him. A madman who did the most outrageous things but managed to somehow still galvanise people and make himself into a legend.
I said a Scotsmen scored a better goal than Diego so work that out!

He was a maverick. As has been said, there's a fine line between madness and genius. And Diego crossed that line several times.

Even though I was rightly fuming at the handball goal, when he scored 'that goal' a few minutes later, I remember saying to my dad "that's the best goal I've ever seen. It was brilliant".

My dad's response was "I can't believe Shilton got beaten in the air by a 5ft Argentinian midget!" he was still fuming about the first goal!
He has a point though. How does a 6ft 3" goal keeper get beaten in the air by someone who is 5ft 5"?

Simple really, he had more ground to cover to get to the ball and Maradona got their first.

Not having that at all.

But then I never rated Shilton, especially in that WC and Italia 90. He was just too slow.
The penalties against the Germans in the Semi, they were in the back of the net before he had dived. And only a couple were good penalties.

Shilts was too slow for Italia 90, he was poor in the penalties.

He is six foot. His hand was two feet higher. Here's what genius looks like in the 1980's.

Remember discussing with pals whether bringing Dave Beasant off the bench would've been a gamble worth taking.
Difficult call to make, tough on Shilts and a big ask of Beasant - but you are so right, Shilts was past it.

Did a decent job for us (Bolton) at the end of his career, wasn't about being agile, he just inspired confidence in the defence.

Bestie died 15 years ago today. Sad coincidence.
Met him a couple of times in the year leading up to his death as he used tj frequent a cafe restaurant in Surbiton.
He wrote a lovely personalised and signed autograph wishing my son good luck in the county cup.
