Occasionally driving it to 200 Km/h on the motorway to clean the **** out of it :)
On a more serious note, most of my driving is at motorway speeds (legal or nearly legal)

drove up and down A3 yesterday with scanner attached and clearing codes every 10 minutes for about 30 minutes and still no bloomin regen, got back home and checked coolant temp only at 68 degrees, so sat on drive revving engine and temp rose to over 90 degrees and noticed a load of white smoke pumping out of exhaust, so seems you can do a regen simply sat on drive

Do you think there maybe a thermostat issue?

not entirely sure, wasn't checking the temp when driving just clearing codes so not entirely sure of running temp, but at standstill revving the thing at about 3k it rose all the way up to 97

With reduced airflow, not entirely surprised

true, but fans kicked in, so I'm assuming stat is opening and closing fine, probably need to have another bloomin drive with scanner attached and checking running temp, but really cant be ar-sed

It’s not really cold at the mo. After 30 mins driving I’d have expected it to be over 90 and holding a pretty constant temp. Modern thermostats (some electronically controlled) keep cars in quite a narrow temp band and try to get them there quickly to help with emissions.

It might be worth a look.

will get round to it eventually, just getting cheesed off with the bloomin thing at the moment, not looked up yet how and where the stat is on my X5 E70 3.0D

Didn’t realise it was a Beemer. Not sure about modern ones but if it was an E39 I’d bet you £100 the electric thermostat has failed.

Stat <> temp switch. If the stat is not closing, it's not blocking flow to the rad which is why it's cold on a run. Stand it still water is still flowing through the rad, but there's much less air, so temperature goes up. Eventually the thermal switch (not stat) will reach temp and turn the fans on.

I'd put money on the stat being stuck

the amount of time wasted in googling and looking up fixes for this car is just gobsmacking, thank christ for the internet, otherwise id have blown some serious money with clueless main stealers, so i now need to do a recky on where and how to replace the stat or stats:read1:

It does sound like a thermostat issue, the ECU will not allow regen with a low coolant temperature. The BMW 3.0D has two thermostats, best to do both even though they are a pain.

So I handed in my notice to quit as I am heading off to greener pastures (hopefully) in January

My manager was an utter unt and laid into me. Then instead of giving me gardening leave for the next three weeks instead I have been demoted to the office b!tch doing manual labour and stuffing envelopes. FML

Seems strange.
You’re entitled to leave as presumably you haven’t signed on for life - and if you went about it in the correct way then he’s out of order. If he “laid into” you then he’s in the wrong,
Put in an immediate complaint to hr about what’s happened and I’m sure the next 3 weeks will be more pleasant.
