It seems I have a damaged Nationwide Flexdirect Debit card following an hour and a half on the telephone jumping through security hoops.
I cannot use a cash machine or log in to my on line account because of the card.
A replacement is being issued and needs 5 working days to arrive.
I am abroad in 4 working days
Can I log in to my account to transfer money?
No you told me I had damaged card
Can I go to a branch to access money?
No you have closed them all
is there anything else I can do for you?
You have not done anything yet............................

Yes I have a card reader that I slot my card in. It generates a number that I input to the on line account for access.
The card is damaged (apparently) and so does not generate the access code
an unhappy customer will be in NW first thing Monday morning

More
It transpires my nearest branch is closed all next week for refurbishment.
I have found a branch in Thirsk where I will be for dinner. So I am off there now with steam coming from my ears

I feel you pain, I remember being on an extended holiday in the US a few years back, told my bank I was off for 3 weeks yet as soon as I paid for lunch on arrival they shut down credit card, tried debit and they shut that. No amount of telephone calls would resolve the matter, thank fully my wife had acted it card with her. We called first to make sure that did not get shut down as well.
My new bank are much more helpful ;)

Yeah, I had that on a trip to South Africa a few years ago. But they did call and leave a message on my home ansafone saying they were concerned there might be a problem with my cards. So that was nice.

A number of banks offer an emergency access code in times of, well, I guess, emergency. Usually limited to a set time and a particular cash machine. No card needed. Muggins 'ere left his wallet at Stansted once upon a time and being a tight frugal jock wasn't carrying extra cash. Facing a long walk the other end the bank were more than helpful.

However, as this is the rant thread, in the interest of balance, a haggis buying experience ended abruptly when the bank refused card payment. All of £10 at a store approx. 100 yards from home. The bank claimed a security risk flagged up but wouldn't elaborate. Now, I know haggis isn't everyone's cup of tea but to suggest the said wee beastie was in some way a danger was a bit harsh I feel - I mean look at his face....

You don't necessarily need the card reader to sign onto a Nationwide account. you can sign in using a memorable keyword and a 6 digit secret number.

Lorries. In particular the ones that decide to block two lanes when you are coming up to the filter just before roadworks!
Who are these self appointed guardians of the road network who dislike being overtaken when there are two lanes to use for over 400 yards?:mad::mad:

People who think their trip is more important than mine by jumping the queue to filter to one lane at roadworks even though they've been warned for the past 3 miles, meaning if I do the British thing and queue I never get anywhere..

The age old argument about how to use filter lanes, I am of the view that they work better if people filter in well before the cones where as I know other people who believe using two lanes as long as possible and then everybody filters in turn works best.

Once past the 400 yard / meter sign then you will have to force your way in front of me but before that I will happily make space for you to filter.

Insurance quotes.

Move from a typical housing estate on the outskirts of a City to a barn in the middle of the sticks and my insurance goes up by 50%¿?¿

Put the old post code in to the compare rats site and its £120 less.

PS I also refuse to let que jumpers in as it is they that cause the sodding que!

I personally would feel too guilty bypassing people who have been waiting in the queue before me, so I indicate and filter in at the beginning.

You can log in with your personal (memorable) data instead of using the card reader. It will be something you wrote down and kept hidden away from prying eyes.

Yes thank you
I tried that also and I guess I mis remembered it and that too blew me out.
Today I have received new Telephone Banking details - still no new card, hopefully tomorrow before I set off for the Caribbean - did I mention that?
