Deffo Hungary, my mate is Hungarian and bangs on about this, Sovs took over in 1946....

Yes, deffo Hungary.

Dern it - I had lots of great clues lined up....

After the Great War the Austro-Hungarian Empire was broken up, but Hungary (after a very brief republic, where they were duffed up by all their neighbours, and lost about half their territory), voted to go back to being a monarchy and to make Charles IV, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, their king. But all their neighbours said that if Charles came and took the throne they would invade. So Miklós Horthy became 'regent', and despite Charles trying twice to come and take his crown, Horthy stayed on as regent (and effectively dictator) until 1946. Meanwhile Charles was ignominiously shipped off to Madeira by the British and died shortly thereafter.

Right, I've had one in mind for ages, it's not really Google-able, bit off-the-wall, so will take nearest guess, this is from The Good Life in 1976, Jerry was sacked by his boss, Andrew, for not catering for some Dutch clients.

So;

1. Aside from an expense account and company car, what was Jerry's salary per annum, bearing in mind he was a senior executive at JJM, and had a mahooosive crib in Surbiton (actually house was in Northwood) and an expensive wife (Margot).

2. What was Jerry's car, make, mode, colour and year?

1 trumps 2......

I have a strange memory that Jerry's car was a bronze Ford Granada with a black vinyl roof, but that might be nonsense.

On salary I would have to estimate. But rather pleasingly, when I started work in 1980, I was on exactly £5,000 pa, and when my father started work in 1952 he was on exactly £500 pa. (I was hoping one of my boys would start on £50,000, but that didn't work out.) So my guess is £10,000.

Car, wrong...

I started at Bolton Gate Company Ltd, Turton St., Bolton as a Works Clerk in 1979 on £6292 pa, with zero experience in anything, so I can't quite believe Jerry's salary, 10k not right but it's still a bit of a 'Really?'

In the late sixties, my Dad, a very skilled Turner for Hick, Hargreaves, Edbro and Roberts Filling Machines all In Bolton, was on £17 a week. mid 80's he'd had enough, and became a Postman.

Jerry's car was yellow, and an estate......

It was also an automatic, like a QP6, Ghibli III or QP5 GTS...

I liked Margot, but I'm afraid that judgement was purely based on tit size....

Seeing as mine was a frivolous question, I'll give the answer, was £18k a year plus expense account and a company car (said Volvo), which to be honest doesn't seem a lot even given the time, only three times my starting salary as a wee lad, albeit three years later, and he was a top exec. Got him a subservient (sort of) non-working wife and a posh pad in Zone 2 probs with probs 4 beds and huge garden with windbreak. And hols on safari in Kenya, see Harvest Ep, Series 1....

MarkMas was nearest, so its him...

Fukn love The Good Life me....

My brain woke me up at 5:55 this morning to let me know that while I did get the boat/rope question right (by saying that the boat rose with the tide), my sarcastic smart-**** answer about securing the boat to the ocean floor was not just mathematically wrong (saying 3 hours instead of 2), but also I was talking nonsense about the rope ladder having to non-floating. Obviously if the boat was tied down, and the rope ladder was floating, the end of the rope ladder and the bottom rungs would just start to float on the surface, but the third rung would still get wet, and probably 'covered' after 2 hours. The helpful diagram below shows the various scenarios.

MarkMas was nearest, so its him...

WTF!?! OK:

I know some people on here absolutely love multi-answer questions, so:

List the planets of the solar system in ascending order of the number of moons that each has. (With extra points for the correct number and any names of moons).

At last a Q I know something about
Mercury - 0
Venus -0
Earth -1
Mars - 2 Phobos and Deimos
Jupiter - originally 4, now lots including Io, Europa, Ganymede (largest in solar system I believe)
Saturn - even more including Titan, Enceladus
Uranus - originally 5 but now lots including Miranda, Ariel Umbrial (?) all named after Shakespear characters (not Bottom!)
Neptune - originally 2 Triton +1 now lots
Does Pluto count anymore? - 2 including Chiron

Well, daverichardson seems to know his moons, but he has totally failed to answer the question!

List the planets of the solar system in ascending order of the number of moons that each has.

Yup. I have:
  1. Mercury: 0
  2. Venus: 0
  3. Earth: 1
  4. Mars: 2 - Phobos & Deimos
  5. Neptune: 14 - inc Triton
  6. Uranus: 27
  7. Saturn 53 - inc Mimas, Enceladus, Tethys, Titan
  8. Jupiter: 79 - inc Io, Europa, and Callisto, Ganymede
So I think the way this works is that midlifecrisis won, and then he asked "What is DaveRichardson's favourite colour? ", so if Dave can get that one right, he is up next!
