Binary 1111111111 = 1023

Hhmm

So the question I think you're answering is what could the Babylonians have counted to if they used a binary system that was invented some 4000 years after they existed?

Over to MLC, who answered the question that was asked!

No no! We're now discussing the question you asked (per my quote up there) not the question your clearly failing memory thinks you asked :D

I think we've done with mathematics. I can imagine a lot of you were counting your fingers.

Football, who could have been called Northumberland Rovers?
As a bonus, how is this related to their final name?

Barnstoneworth United?

Or is it team that won the first World Cup, Blythe I think. Dennis Waterman played for them...

I looked it up (I care about quizzes, but know nothing about football) and was amazed at the answer. But yes, there is a clue in their name, so like any really good quiz question, you can work it out if you think hard enough.

But I didn't.

Correct and how did you work out the answer? Please show your working out otherwise you'll only get half marks...

It was something of a guess that they are rather close to Northumberland Park station. I suppose if that's not enough, I only have to give half a question? ;)

That'll do, apparently the Northumberland connection is due to the Duke of Northumberland who owned the land in the area. He was Harry Hotspur as depicted in Henry IV. Over to you for your full question.

Riddle type question:

A 10 foot rope ladder hangs over the side of a boat with the bottom rung on the surface of the water. The rungs are one foot apart, and the tide goes up at the rate of 6 inches per hour. How long will it be until three rungs are covered?

Assuming that the boat is VERY FIRMLY anchored to the sea bed in all directions, and the rope ladder has non-floating rope and heavy rungs, 6 hours.

(Also, if it is a 10-foot ladder with the bottom rung on the water, then it is probably a ship, not a boat.)

Not the answer I'm looking for, I'm afraid. There may also be klaxons
However, your 'VERY FIRMLY' intrigues me. Care to elaborate?

If you assume the bottom rung floats, then never.
If you assume the rung doesn't float (eg the ladder is fixed to the boat) then it takes 4 hours to move two feet to cover the next two rungs.
