Quattroporte Clutch Position Sensor

Unforseen stalling, a gearbox warning light on the dash accompanied by a 'go to the dealer' imperative prompted an early call to Emblem Sports Cars. Upon arrival that day the Maserati SD3 connection pointed firmly towards a fault with the clutch position sensor. The engine ECU also showed that it had received instructions from the gearbox to shut down. HR Owen in London had a new sensor in stock at a cost of £230 and this arrived the following day. Instead of removing the gearbox for this operation Emblem gained access by removing the starter motor. No doubt this tricky procedure saved many hours of labour. I was pleased to get the car back so promptly since I was able to particpate in the Bristol Auto Italia after all...... And I did enjoy that Rossini steak at San Carlos!

Glad it worked out ok, and well done to emblem. Any chance you can get the old sensor back, we might be able to match it up as £230 is a joke for a sensor.

The type of clutch position sensor is dependant on the year of your Quattroporte. At first sight it looked as though I might need one costing half the price and this would have meant ordering the item from Italy. However upon checking the specs I did need the one described..... I did see the defective part once removed from the car. It was different in appearance from the one in Conaero's photograph above but equally unimpressive. I am sure once the owner has seen the parts they are discarded. Emblem showed me another one for a Ferrari. It had an identical part number but was in a diffrent box and it cost almost twice as much. Apparently only the terminals were different! Notwithstanding the labour saving technique used on this occasion the total bill still amounted to £839.46 pence.

Ha Ha, well, based on your Ferrari one being twice the price the alfa one should be about £100 then, and the Fiat on about 50p!

I wonder why it had the same part number when the part was different. Italian logic?

Many thanks for the information Paul,
Regards,
Enzo.

Enzo. You're welcome..... Emblem did say that they had undertaken one of these repairs on a QP in the past so the issues are not unheard of. With regards to my car they also replaced the retaining screws....... I think they also did something with the pate on toast... Sorry I think I am confusing this bit with the Rossini steak again..... How I miss waxing lyrical on the Quattroporte in the New Forest thread!

Regards,

Paul

Hi Paul, just read your post, as I have just been told by local Main Dealer my Clutch sensor in my 2006 QP needs changing and would cost £2.5K approx, I am a mechanic with no experience of the QP clutch sensor?? but surely with starter removed you would not be even able to see the Clutch sensor as the flywheel with clutch etc will be in the way, as I assume the Clutch sensor is fitted to the release bearing which is right in the center ??, would definitely save a load of time and money if you are correct, and help appreciated, Regards Eddie

Having taken one to bits, the chances of changing this sensor without removing the bell housing are, to my eye anyway, nil.

Even if you could get to the bolts it would be like trying to wire a plug through a keyhole.

Seems to me there were two versions of the throwout bearing assembly, the latter of which is known as the starfish one. Wonder if one and not the other can have the clutch position transmitter accessed through the starter? I agree, though, that the dual plate clutch bundle would have to be bulky, impeding access to F1 position transmitter and wiring, etc.
