On an episode of 'Wheeler Dealers' Mike Brewer got some shocks rebuilt by some guy in a backstreet workshop, sorry, can't remember precise details but at the time thought 'this could be useful'

It was the case that David Askew (at the very least) was able to re-engineer. I suspect that's where Mike had his done. Sadly this option is no longer available. I guess there just wasn't the margin in it.....

Correct, I corresponded with David and he cannot refurb skyhook shocks.

How did they diagnose one was faulty?

Because of the noise it made going over bumps
