QP V GTS electrical 'blankout' issue

Hello team-

not my car; but a colleague runs a QP V GTS and has experienced a very unusual fault.

Recently (a couple of months ago) the battery went dead on the car, whilst the owner was away, and this was replaced.

Last night; the car responded to the key fob and unlocked, the key was put in the ignition and turned to 'electrics on', but at the moment of turn-over; everything died. Car totally dark; key stuck in ignition (electrical release?)

what can possibly have happened..?

Mine has done that twice (in 2 years) and I have no idea why. I suspect it's a dodgy earth clip on the negative terminal.

My 'fix' so far: Use emergency cable to open boot. Access battery. Disconnect negative. Have a cuppa (or even less, last time I did it in about 10 seconds) reconnect negative. 'Unlock' car.

Drive as normal (I guess you might want to replace the stuff in the boot).

Once at Thurrock. Once at our local Tesco

Very odd

Catman is likely correct (of course!!). It can only be an earth issue although there can be a million reasons. I would check the battery connections and the various sub connections that come from the terminals and look for something loose from when the battery was changed.

as it happens-

Catman hit it right-on-the-head.

Worked first time- all good now.

Many thanks from my colleague & myself...!

That happened in a BMW e39 540 MSport I had. random complete blackouts, often in traffic. Just a few seconds though and the car would start again. It was almost new. So, don't blame the Italians, OK! ;)

PS: in my case never found out what it was, and problem seemed to "go way" by itself...

Could also be the cutoff button but earth was my first thought. I have seen the earth cable fracture at the terminal too, Franks did in Le Mans this year...a quick wiggle and he was good to go but it completely sheered as he drove up his drive.
