QP/GT front subframes - the truth

It also seems to be business opportunity for someone with space. Get some subframes used, get them blasted, powder coated etc and have them ready. I see Eurospares have front ones available from £950, factor in blasting etc and you’ll have a tidy frame ready to go.. I’m off to make space in the garage.

Excellent write up Matt - this advise really needs to be followed.

My car looked great up to 4 years old and then in year 5, it looked like a different car. It had been meticulously looked after by the Maserati GB master techs and then by myself & my local MD, and always garaged. It then went to AV who carried out the treatment which was probably just in in time. AV did a great job and sent me photos every step of the way, the before photos were quite a shock!
It can take hold very quickly and if there is even the slightest hint of an issue, you must act now and not leave it a year as it could be a very costly mistake

It is almost like built in obsolescence. I know Alfas are exactly the same with 159s and Breras now starting to require new subframes, or just uneconomical to repair.

This is a really great thread Matt and will help those thinking of buying as well as owners. Maserati should be embarrassed that a 2010 car will start to rust like this. Shocking quality...Its clear that if you have one of these no matter how old get it done ASAP. Once done do you have to do it again in a few years ?

It is not just a Maserati problem. Have a look under any JLR product over 3 years old. Or probably any car.

The problem is how the UK deal with winter weather.
My 2010 Jaguar is like brand new and the same for my 30 year old Renault 4.
No salt on the roads in France.
My Porsche I brought over this Summer I had to make new brake pipes and renew the flexi hoses as the ends were so rusty.

We know of anyone within an hours radius of the north east can perform this protection?

Yes, get others have problems with this but not all so if one company can get it right then a manufacturer changing 80/90k for a car new you should not expect an issue 9 years down the line. I think it's shocking and there is no excuse for this sort of quality this day and age. Maserati is the one company that needed to show it had improved on its reputation in the 80's and this I'm afraid doesn't help.

Speak to Steve at Falcon Engineering in South Bank, Davy road. Have their own body shop as well as garage so maybe able to offer it. I’m picking my car up later so I’ll ask..

Reading this thread with interest made me quickly inspect my car today... a 2008 GT.. I'd actually coated my car when I first bought it 5 years ago. Obviously not very well (see attached). Now seeking a professional.
I've contacted JR Classics in Doncaster who have quoted me £680 to complete a full cavity wax and underseal, this is including door panels etc.

Has anyone used them and does this sound reasonable? Is it over the top? I can't see myself getting rid any time soon due to how unispiring most newer cars are.. so may as well future proof.

The panel that’s rusty in your pic, I replaced mine while the bumper was off being resprayed. Think they were £50 each from euro spares, they seem to be very thin dirt catchers!
The structural subframe that they bolt to was spotless in behind, hopefully yours is the same.

Do you happen to have part numbers? I'll get them ordered this evening!

I suspect my subframe will be OK due to it being on ramp just a few months ago due to modification work. I do get the mechanics to have a good poke around, and I painted it myself a few years back when it was definitely in good nick. I'd just obviously missed the front panels... Doh!
I wish I had a ramp at home!!

When I was looking to buy a year or so ago, I saw a few that had signs of too much corrosion for my liking.
The pictures attached were from a 2009 with only 2 owners, just 21k miles, and kept in a garage. It also had full Maserati main dealer service history.
The bodywork was perfect, the interior like new, drove lovely, and until I looked underneath, I was about to part with my hard earned cash as it was otherwise like new!
Needless to say, it was the first thing I looked at when viewing after that.

If only they were treated properly for the British Climate it wouldn't be a problem.
Salting and Gritting roads causes so much damage to delicate cars.
The one above could be saved though looking at the pictures.
