QP/GT front subframes - the truth

My view is that it is more related to use and storage. If you are buying a car, get it thoroughly inspected and then protected if all is well and you shouldn’t have any issues.
The 4200 and GS suffered from poor internal corrosion treatment and generally rusted inside out, particularly around the right hand side where the wishbones connected.
The GTs have surface rust generally meaning that it could be use as Zep says.
Treatment is simple, remove surface rust, treat the surface with a quality rust inhibitor and then paint with a quality protective coating.

My 2010 QP GTS has 75k in the clock - ‘high’ mileage considering others of a similar age. I had it inspected this summer before purchase, and the subframe was given a clean bill of health - the previous owner didn’t have it garaged, and neither do I. BUT - I will be taking preventative action in the new year.

Get an inspection done before purchase :)

Thanks all, hopefully the car is free enough from rust at the moment and I would 100% get into this clean and protect routine. Could anyone recommend an inspection service in the Cambridge area ?

OOF! Got to say been under a lot of cars recently, Well-used Audis and BMWs of this era are not suffering like this at all. I only have experience of 2 Maseratis but both pretty good due to preventative maintenance having been carried out.

Jaguars on the other hand, terrible.

Totally anecdotal. YMMV

Mercs are in the terrible category along with some of the Japanese manufacturers from what I see on my MOT forum.

Try Barr Tech in Cambridge or Rustbusters in Spalding, Lincs

Indeed have heard about Mercs but no personal experience so didn't comment. Same with Japanese but my friendly rust-proofer has seen some horror stories. Virtually zero protection in the factory, imported here and you can guess the rest.
