A prescription was emailed directly to my local pharmacy after a doctors visit, due to a doggy knee. Total cost £18.70
When i got home in it was some pain relieving cream and ibuprofen tablets, £9.35 each.
I could not believe the ibuprofen were normal generic tablets, not only that, only 24, the other half of the 48 box had been removed so not even a full box! I could have bought the same FULL box at the same pharmacy for a few quid.
Who is taking the **** here, the NHS, The Practice, Doctor, or pharmacy?

Probably all of them. Surprised the GP didn’t suggest over the counter stuff.
A lot of these heavily promoted analgesics are just Ibuprofen/Paracetamol formulated in a fancy frock.

The Government.

A few years back, I got an ear infection which pressed on the nerve and result was similar to Bells Palsy. I was prescribed some ear drops for the infection and prednisolone for the palsy. That was around £8 at the time for just 8 tablets . My friend, who's a vet, told me he could get the prednisolone far cheaper from his surgery, 25 for a £1.
Even better for him was that I freely popped them in my mouth and swallowed, his usual patients put up a bit of a fight.
I soon recovered but I felt ruff...

Does the GP practice own the pharmacy?

There has always been a balance since prescription payments were introduced.

As RodT says, my docs normally say just to take brufen. I have had pharmacists do the same. On another note, take foam out with you next time for comfort. Dogging knee is painful. ;)

Having a Dr in the house helps me avoid any costly prescription issues, but you could always look it up and see what you have - you will also find Boots own brand is 1/4 the price of advertised items despite it being exactly the same... rather like Maserati parts pricing policy.

Dogging knee is painful. ;)

Sage advice from one with so much experience.

As for the subject matter, it’s the doctor, they could easily have just told you. If the it is ibuprofen gel, that’s pretty pricey so you might not be that far out.

If I had known the prescription was bog standard ibuprofen tablets I would have said something. The fact I only got half the box of 48 has just wound me up even more!

It's obviously the government. I'd pay nothing at all for the same thing up here in Scotland ;)

The problem of course is that in setting a standard charge for all prescription items, for every person getting to £100's per tablet new treatment for an ultra rare disease, there is probably 10+ paying 9 quid for some paracetamol or ibuprofen that you can pick up in Home Bargains or something for 49p a box.

To add to the rant, the Mrs has a regular prescription for some 12mg tablets.
They don't do 12mg doses, so they come in one box of 8mg, and one box of 4mg.
Yes you have guessed it, now classed as two prescription charges!

A few years back I had the worst toothache I've ever had in my life, nothing would touch it, my wife has prescribed pills for nerve end pain so I threw a couple of those down my neck

They didn't touch it so I rang 101

They asked what I'd taken, when I got to my wife's tablets there was a gasp, where did you get those from, so I told him, listen mate at the moment if somebody knocked on the door selling crack cocaine I'd be a buyer so no lectures just tell me what else I can take.

They're free now I'm over 60, I'm amazed they've not raised that yet
