As one motoring journal cited: "The Gransport is the car the 4200 should have been"

I think there is a scarcity in numbers ( GS being fewer than 4200 and GS Spyder even fewer). Your budget should get you a nice 4200. Not sure the same applies for your upper end budget for a tidy sorted GS.

Which would be fine had they tested the 4200 facelift, which, from a handling perspective has identical components (slightly higher ride, smaller, lighter wheels = less unsprung mass)
5hp is nothing.
I don’t see the surfboards and sporty seats making it the car it should have been...

It’s generally accepted that the Gransport is the more sorted of all previous iterations.

I think it’s fair to say most on here would have one over previous models.
Why though? A small increase in bhp, lowered suspension and a bodykit, I'm clearly missing something but the price premium seems excessive.

I've had them all 2004 MY 4200, 2005 MY 4200 and a 2006 MY GS.

The earlier car was the most fun per £ and the most reliable.

The 2005 face lift the most comfortable and stylish.

The GS is the most sporty but sadly not the better for it.

Think carefully how you intend to use the car and if you want to rack up some miles without worry of ruined re-sale go for a 4200.

The car will not be in daily use, it will be another weekend/holiday car, either replacing or being along side my Mercedes SL500, and likely do less than 3k miles a year. I'm not an overtly sporty driver, I like a bit of comfort.

The GS having 19" wheels wasn't the brightest idea, more fashion than function.
Same with BMW M3's at the same time, lots had 19" wheels but it was generally acknowledged that the car was better on the 18" wheels.
The Trofeo 4200 ran 18" wheels on track, says it all really.

Would someone be able to tell me the difference between the pre and post facelift 4200's and what month/year was the facelift. Thanks

May 2003 saw the first revised 4200s classed as the 2004 MY. Easy to spot as they did not have the two allen screws on the gear shift.

Full face list saw the new front and rear bumpers c end of 2004.

Hi Davidt99....

The facelifts came in circa 2004/ 2005, they were registered to as late as 2007 (when they trickled through in handfuls via the importer Maranello concessionaires) and had the following detail differences:
-Revised dashboard numericals
-Ashtray got smaller with the addition of a cupholder.
-Front grill got revised and slightly bigger with an addition of a chin spoiler on the bumper ducting (though not as deep as the Gransport)
-Rear bumper received meshed vents in the lower flanks
-Trident badging on the buttress of the facelift cars.....Some came with them and some didn’t although became standard figment on the final 20 or so cars (factory order sheet will confirm this)
-18 inch multispoke wheels standard
-19inch GS rims (standard factory fitted/painted on the final 20 or so cars but note that this is not exhaustive or conclusive yet as I’m still researching that figure)
-Still available as a manual three pedal gearbox ie a stick shift and the Gransport was paddle shift only.
Total worldwide production of pre/post facelift coupes 5371 cambiocorsa, 1078 manual 3 pedal cars and of those manual 3pedal cars 214 were right hand drive.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys for all the info. I think based on what has been said here and after further research on the www I have decided the 4200 is the one for me to look more closely at.

I thought I'd let the 4200/GS debate run for a bit!

It's only human nature that someone with a 4200 will tell you a 4200 is better and someone with a GS will tell you a GS is better.

Truth is both are right and both are wrong. In the main the people that have 4200's have them for a reason. Then the people with GS's in the main have them for a reason. Often neither wants the other for the reasons they chose the other in the first place.

I'm just about to push the button tomorrow on an Aston V8 Vantage which would see my blue 4200 and Chimaera go to the dealer as payment plus a little cash.

If your really quick you are more than welcome to look at my 4200 but it would need to be quick I'm afraid. I had agreed a sale on it yesterday with a guy from Scotland and have been waiting for the deposit today before I take it off sale. No deposit yet so I've given the guy until the morning to complete. If not and I will look to do a deal with the Aston seller/dealer. We are a smidge off on number but close enough I think a deal is possible.

If you wanted my 4200 it's a cracking car that Autoshield and Richard Grace know pretty well. It is on PH and eBay at the moment as I listed it on Thurs/Frid.

You won't regret buying a 4200 IMHO and they are cracking VFM at the mo. I bought my 2007 car from its first owner on only 11k miles. Had it over 4 years and it has been faultless. To be fair I don't drive it as much as I'd like!

I'll find the links to the ads so you can see. I really don't mind if you wanted it or not but be quick if you do as it might be gone in a few days possibly a deal done tomorrow.

Good luck with the search and keep us posted. We can always pass comment on any you find and many of us might know about some cars.

The PH ad is:

Then the Ebay one:

I had agreed to sell it last night at £13k btw as I have nothing to hide. Prefer to be honest, transparent, open and up front.

Nice one Dean you are certainly a nice Guy to deal with from reading all your deals and you have had a few for sure.
I reckon your car could be for our man and he keeps a war chest too.

Thanks Phil. We'll all I can do is lay my head on the pillow at night and be 100% content with what I do and how I deal with situations and people. That is good enough for me and my personal yardstick.

I'll never be silly rich but it isn't primarily about money for me. Never was....never will be.

I'm a little perturbed but the guy that agreed to buy the 4200 that I haven't received a deposit from that won't respond to my calls or messages now. Oh well, lots of time wasters out there unfortunately so will move one.

The Vantage I've found is very nice and the deal he has offered is fair and close enough that I can squeeze him to where I need to be. Always wanted a mid/dark grey metallic one with the kind of matching facelift lights but his is Jet Black. I am agreeing to buy his blind as he is just over 4 hours away so won't see until I take a part ex up there to see.

He says it is Jet Black but with lots of metallic flake, which I could live with but don't want a flat solid black. Just seeing if I can't find some pics of one or if a local Aston dealer would have one I could see.

I'm sure the OP would love the Blue 4200 I have as it is my favourite colour combo in a 4200. Being a facelift for me tops it off.

If you agree a deposit, you pay it instantly.
Sounds like a time waster from Scotland, if delayed with a deposit, what about the final payment?
When I sold my Elise, the French guy transfered the deposit within 15 minutes of the phone call via PayPal, on receipt of detail pictures the full balance by international bank transfer, and picked it up a week later, having never seen the car in person!
He brought a trailer, and didn't want to drive it, so it didn't get dirty. I insisted (even though it was his having already paid for it) he at least drove it around the block first before loading!

Agreed Mike. Sound like you Elise deal went well and both sides were decent people.

Some people eh? I always like to be a man of my word buy it is so hard when people don't do the same in reverse.

My last few weeks of car related activity has been interesting to say the least. The TVR I lost out on really displayed how poor the human race can be some times.....morally.

Totally agree with you both.
I bought my Boxster just like the guy bought Mikes Lotus.
Only difference was I drove it straight back to France with Ms French in toe in the Jaguar.
Being honest always pays off well.
