Post gearbox EV1 pipe replacement

Hi all

My 4200 CC is back on the road. It started up without issue, or funny noises, after it's protracted 4 month long repair. It was a bit daunting to drop the transmission and replace the EV1 pipe, though it took much longer to get it all back together. Working under jack stands wasn't the easiest, but it's doable.

My question is that I've seen in severable places that the hydraulics are one way and that the system must be bled after a repair like this. The clutch line was disconnected with the quick disconnect and the EV1 pipe was replaced with another. The system was topped up several times in the process, but at no stage has it been bled. Now back together, I was expecting problems, but it's driving as perfectly as before. No error lights, no funny clutch engagement and even in sport mode the changes are fast and issue free.

There obviously is a return line of sorts, so is it possible any air bubbles have worked the way out of the system? After all the entire EV1 line was empty when installed. At one stage during the repair I overfilled the reservoir and it seemed like a lot of extra fluid overflowed, after I did a few 1-N-R changes. I was assuming it would need a trip to the dealer in Auckland for a gearbox bleed, which I was quoted about 12 hours labour plus materials for.

Thoughts please?

Cheers, Graeme

Hi there,

Just seen this post and having done something similar with my car some years ago (search for F1 gearbox woes for the thread) and did not have it bled by the dealer and car has worked perfectly fine since. I just bled mine by opening the door a few times - just don't touch the 'lock' valve as I did!

Thanks for that. I was just looking for some feedback. It seems to be working fine, but now has a leak from somewhere else :^(. I need to get under it again to track it down - a small puddle of oil on the floor. It's such a pig to get at the reservoir to top up.

The level light came on again. Hopefully just a perished rubber tube from the reservoir...

We have just replaced the same EV1 pipe on a GranTurismo S.

It was damaged at the rear where the last person whom removed the gearbox smacked it into the rear crossmember.

Its the pipe that sticks out the furthest at the back of the gearbox so the one that gets damaged.

I suggest you all have a look to make sure yours is not going.

Its easy to inspect, lay down at the rear of the car, locate the rear of the gearbox and the several mesh stainless pipes and its pretty simple to work out what it would hit. If it goes, it will leave you stranded.

I haven't had a chance to track it down. It just slowly leaks out on the floor, but I can't see where from. It's not squirting out as the gears are changed, like before the pipe was replaced but I just can't see where it's coming from. I wish my eyes were better....

Update.. Well I chased that leak but in the end I think it was just overflowing from the reservoir. As the empty replacement pipe filled up, it used the oil which made the reservoir low. Due to the location I tended to overfill it, which of course resulted in more overflowing. It seems to be stable now. Working fine and not leaking or showing "LOW" on the dash after use.

As a warning to all: at one point to save time, I tried to reverse the car up on some car ramps I have. NEVER do this with a CC car. Of course it jumped the ramps which has resulted in a fuel pipe being damaged and now leaking. Groan - how stupid could I be.

That’s good news about ev pipe repair, annoying about coming off the ramps, easily done with the clutch bite.
Let us know how you sort the fuel pipes as think original ones are not available when I looked at changing mine.
I have a slight weep from one of the hydraulic pipes so I’ll drop the gearbox this winter and see which one it is to replace.

Is the EV1 pipe item 19 in page 44 of the QP diagram? My leak might be the single end of the three on item 19. Prefer to replace just the rubber section. On the basis of £450 cost of whole part + least changes to hydraulic circuit.

Can I drop / droop the transmission just enough the get at the pipes? Thinking about disconnecting driveshafts from differential then transmission mounts mounts. Lower the whole gearbox + diff on trolley jack. Leaving torque tube connected which will of course pivot engine upwards slightly.
