Hi all,

Planning a road trip with my beloved, O and the wife, from the UK to Modena. Does anyone have any recommendations on roads and Hotels etc?

Looking at staying in some nice hotels on some of the lakes in Switzerland and Italy, also having a crack at the Stelvio pass. .

Many thanks

Make sure you include the...

Black Forrest in Germany
Grimsel, Susten and Furka passes in Switzerland

Factories
Definitely go to Pagani. It's amazing, you get right up to the cars.

Ferrari, see if you can convince your local Ferrari Dealer to get you on the Ferrari Owners Tour. It's unparalleled. You see them building every single part of the car, putting the engines together, testing the engines on benches, walk the production line, watch them handstitch the interior. If you cannot get on the Ferrari Owners Tour, I wouldn't bother with Ferrari. The general tour is very poor, you just get driven round in a bus and barely go into the buildings.

Lamborghini, I've not been but it's meant to be great.

Maserati, I'm sure others here can advise. I just looked from outside.

Book them before you go.

All of the above. I would do the Route Napoleon again in a heart beat too.

The Maserati factory is a good tour, assuming they aren’t retooling for new models this summer. You can book through the website. Pagani is also good, you can book through Modenatour.it. You can also book the Panini collection through them.

I found Lamborghini in Santa Agata a bit meh. Definitely do the Casa Di Enzo in Modena though.

Will be doing the same in Sept via Route Napoleon.

We will stay at Château Etoge on the first two nights then drive to Grenoble staying in a mid range château called de la commadarie which we have used for the last 4 trips.

We did Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein castles on the way back from Modena, nice little break, they gave me special parking for the 3200 :) Went Lake Garda, Austria, Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium, then ferry. Just short of 3000 miles round trip. Enjoy.

Zep, don’t forget Imola, that was your crowning glory.

This route usually works out ok:

The A23s through Purleys down on the main roads near Purbrights avoiding Leatherheads and then taking the A231s entering Rottingdeans from the North. From Rottingdeans … take the South road …. then ask. ;)

Another vote for the Panini collection all of the above points are true. When my wife and I turned up there was only one other group there; a German family who drove a QPIV.

The Ferrari non-owner related tours and museums are tourist traps, particularly the one the factory so best avoid

If you are going to the region any time near summer take mosquito repellant... Especially in TuscanyThe mossies are more brutal than the ones in Thailand.

In our opinion your not missing much by not doing Stelvio (although we could have done it the wrong way). We're hoping to do the Julier pass to St Moritz, then Bernina to Italy (maybe Malaja and Splugen both ways for a fun detour) and Passo del Tonale (excellent last time we did it) down to Garda - on the map and you-tube it all looks good - but check that your times don't clash with the Giro d"italia pro bike race - I believe it is doing Stelvio this year. I also monitor snow-forecast.com for snow reports as they can have a good dump in (early) May - that forced us to have a major plan change a couple of years ago. The 500 through the Black Forest is a classic - stunning as long as it isn't foggy!!! We stayed in a great quirky place - the wine house in Villingin - basic accommodation, local organic food and it was a wine house!!!

St Moritz is lovely in the summer, the Grand Hotel isn’t too expensive either 65569655706557165572compared with ski season.

The Stelvio is ok but the hairpins are a pain in the a55; accelerate, brake, turn, accelerate, brake turn, repeat ad nauseum. IMO, the best part is below the tree line on the Italian side. ALeo, IMO, a much better driving road is the Blufell pass from Davos over towards the town of Stelvio. It has just about everything; long sweepers, hairpins, long straights and if you happen to meet a local in a hurry, it’s your day so make the most of it and keep up. Extra bonus points if you get past on the inside of a hairpin and leave him behind! :D
