Pirelli win again

Anyone seen the 2019 tyre test in the latest (October issue!!!) EVO magazine?

It won't please all you P Zero bashers, as my (and Maserati's) standard choice, the Pirelli P Zero, wins hands down yet again, both on wet and dry track tests. The Michelin Pilot Sport 4 comes a good second though, with the Continental Premium Contact 6 being 3rd. Certainly, I'm happy with my choice to put a fresh set of P Zero's on my Strad.

(Admittedly, this series of tests didn't include sub-zero temperature or snow driving sessions, but I don't drive my Masers in those conditions anyway.)

I've no wish to stir up the same old tyre arguments and we all have our different preferences and driving styles, but I thought it worth mentioning this latest article.

Really....that does surprise me. I agree the PZero is a very good tyre in the warm/dry without question. However every car I have had it on and driven in anything other than dry/warm has been outright dangerous. On the XJL SS they are lethal. Can't wait for them to wear out ;)

Funny how those results come out, ps4s transformed my Gs into to what I thought it should be. I have Yokohama’s on the R34 and that’s unreal for a 20 year old car for grip on the bends

I think it can look quite different depending what you read, and what size you have fitted...?

Vive le difference...! Choose based on your driving environment ( including car) and style, as they do offer different strengths & weaknesses.

I wish when mentioning Pzero people were more specific, there are many variations. I like them, I had rossos on the AC, nothing wrong with a bit tail happiness ;) Probably better in the wet than its original track orientated tyres! Unfortunately NLA. You also have Neros etc. etc.

Was hoping to move from PZeros to Michelins this time but apparently no PS4's in 245/40/19 available.
What do people think of Pilot Sport 4?

I’ve recently put Pilot Sport 4S’s on mine, and so far I really rate them.

On my Granturismo I had Pirelli Pzeros and they were shockingly bad in anything other than perfect weather conditions... I actually got to the point where I preferred driving the car in the winter once I’d put the winter tyres on.

Pzeros seem to work on Ferrari but are dreadful in Maseratis. Why that is, I can tell you but it’s just fact.

The new PZ Corsas have been great on mine but I 1) rarely go out in very cold temps, 2) avoid wet weather, 3) Pirelli kindly paid for the whole set so I’m a little biased.........
Must admit that the original set that were cracking and hard, skipped around like a cat on a hot tin roof! Can’t compare them with the new rubber.

This is an on going discussion and we have been through it many times. As previously stated I have yet to find a car on Pirellis in the wet or cold that I have confidence in. I am perfectly happy to try other brands and have found Continentals, Pilot Sports and Goodyear Eagles consistently good over the years.

We are just widening a set of SZ rims to better fit the arches whilst remaining on 16", tyre choice is limited to Pirelli, Toyo or Continentals so based on past experience have gone for the latter.

Shocked at that outcome
Never had any good experience with P Zero unless at track temp. or summer above 30deg.

Pirelli's on my GT were brilliant on warm dry smooth roads. Absolutely outstanding.

However, get them on damp or wet bumpy roads when it's about 10 degrees outside and they are shocking.

When I put Pilot Supersports on it they are almost as good as the P Zero's on th warm dry smooth roads but miles ahead on damp/wet bumper roads when it's cold.
And when they did let go, they let go progressively.

I need new tyres before the end of the year. Anybody had experience with these Vredestein Ultrac Vortis? I see them listed alongside the Pirelli and Michelin as performance tyres for the GT sizes (20"). They seem to get good reviews and are a fair bit cheaper on the whole.

Reviews:

Michelin PS4s: http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Michelin/Pilot-Sport-4.htm

Moving to Pilot Sport 4s on the front. Still have life left in the Pzero rears but given the rest of the Emblem "things that need keeping on top of while we have your car in for a service list", replacing perfectly good rears just to match the front seems extravagent!

To be fair, I've never had any issues with the Pzeros and I drive all year round, (but probably not in ice or snow) and it's generally not that cold in the south anyway.

I currently have Michelin on mine and they're great.

I have tried a number of different brands across the Stradale and MC-Shift and I agree that P Zero Nero are very poor but the P Zero Corsa is much better - still prefer the Michelin though

The correct P Zero tyres for modern Masers have the letters MGT on the side. Maybe some people have inadvertently had the wrong versions. It’s the only reason I can think of for people on here not liking a tyre design that consistently wins group tests of high performance tyres in both wet and dry conditions.

Not sure what tyres Matt and Zep have on their Strads instead of P Zero’s, but you can see from the videos of them leaving Wilton House that they had no grip, even in the dry ;)
