Ok let's do it! Lancaster, Stirling, Halifax, vs B-17 Flying Fortress, B-24 Liberator - the WW2 four engine bomber challenge, not counting B-29 came a bit late to the party...

Germany had the Condor - reconnaissance plane really, and the Heinkel He177 - two double engines. But not much good.

Lanc for me.

I was catching a train to Preston from warrington a few years ago , me and one other guy on the platform, on the other side over about 20 minutes 30-40 men started gathering on the platform setting up cameras and video cameras

I was thinking steam train , this huge goods train pulled in , seemed to be mostly tesco wagons , turned out they guy stood next to me was the next driver

It pulled away , took ages for it to clear the platform

I'm looking up the track waiting for chuff chuff chuff, turn to see if any more spectators have turned up and they' ve all gone

What a strange bunch

A couple of years ago I was working a late night freight from Wembley to Crewe with a Class 66 loco, just a few miles north of Northampton I spotted someone in a field on top of a step ladder pointing a camera at me, as I approach him at about 60mph the camera's flash goes off, I give the bloke a long toot on the horn for being a bit of a knob and then realised it was one of my workmates, I caught up with him a few days later and he said ''sorry about the flash but I wanted a pic of your loco, it's me last one for the book''. Train spotters and train drivers are sometimes exceedingly well crossbred...!

Often see the same old faces 'of a certain age' at strategic locations up and down the routes I drive, I think some of their womenfolk are just happy to get them out of the house post retirement.

Back on topic, as if we needed one.... I've run out of old Maser shots so here's something from uncle Ferruccio's mob instead, c/o those nice people at Bertone....

As you drive north on the M6 just before the M54 turn there's a bridge that crosses the motorway at an angle

Many many times I've seen a black van with the side door open , I've seen cars spot it and brake a number of times

I happened to be on that road going over the motorway when the van was there

Bloody stobart spotters

I'm a plane spotter spotter. When I'm working the weekend I often count the number of saddoes at the end of the runway with binoculars and radios. Now a few decades ago, I could understand being a spotter, as there were many different manufacturers, types and configurations. Nowadays even the Aeroflot is a twin-jet Airbus and the others are twin-jet Boeings. There's no bl0ody difference

It was a joy watching The Crown, to see Her Maj flying to, er, Paris in a VC10.
