Yeah, part of the problem, much as I'd like to agree, is that the definition of 'other' is ingrained by literally millions of years of evolution. So less about being 'foreign' as in 'comes from somewhere else' and more about 'not our kind of people' (deliberate choice of phrase)
The nicest, kindest, intelligent people can still react like that because, well, we ignore the programming of our ancestors at our peril
