Petrol/Diesel new car ban

With the cost of fuel at the moment, and even with shopping around - Sainsbury’s Watford 1.419 per litre unleaded, it cost me over £70 to fill up my 1.2litre 3cylinder DS3, and it wasn’t even completely empty. Meantime my Diesel Ghibli using the Maserati recommended premium diesel now cost close to £110 for a fill up!! For me I am being priced off the roads.
I have been looking at EV’s, and whilst I’m in no hurry to change the Ghibli, but if I did in the medium term (est 2023, so probably 2024)Lotus are launching a 4door EV coupe built by their patent company in China, after they launch the now ‘must have’ SUV! Then in 2025 Jaguar are supposedly launching the first of an all new generation of EV’s.
Meantime, and other members views would be interesting, Genesis are launching the electrified version of their recently on sale G80 saloon.
Picture attached, and opinions welcome! As I say even after six years I’m still happy with my Ghibli, but if I were going to change…

As I have not put fuel in a car for months, I too was shocked at a £1.49 per ltr at the local Esso linked to a Tesco Extra... as you say Keith, it a push to get us off the road and spend a fortune on something from China or USA,

It's certainly creeping up over here too especially at the small independent garages that don't have the buying power.
In our village 95 is €1.85 which is 30 cents a litre more than the big boys hate to think how much on the motorways.

Do you think these various industries are all trying to recoup some of the money lost in shutdown Phil? Building materials here have seen a huge increase over the last year.

I'm sure there's some of that going on as we were restricted for a long time here with curfews and for a good chunk of 2020 not allowed to leave your local area.

I fully agree that waiting with EV cars is right as the current tech will look very old very quickly. We all know that unless you run bangers it is depreciation that dwarfs all other motoring costs including fuel. Some electric cars are pushing 10p/mile on 'fuel' and a good diesel like yours is about 15p so the difference is not immense and if you charge an EV away from home then it can flip the other way.

I accept that plenty of people are virtue signalling by buying electric now and selling an existing car - or buying an extra car - that is not very old which disregards the immense CO2 emitted by car production. For me, when my daily driver gets to 75,000 miles or thereabouts then I will have a look but by then plug in hybrids might finally make sense with 100+ mile ranges and small three cylinder supplementary engines so I might not go BEV. Will be sticking with ICE for my nice cars though!

I once had to fill up an Alpina B10 Biturbo at Gloucester Services on the M5. I could feel my soul slip away with every litre...

Sorry @philw696 I quoted the wrong post, I was referring to motorway service spot fuel prices. The posh Gloucester one was by far the worst

Is anyone looking at hybrid. The Volvo T8 setup with AWD looks very interesting. Use electric in town and drive 800km when you need to.

Had one for 18 months, very nice car, and economical when charged at home for short journeys within the pure electric range. But not so economical once you are hybrid or purely petrol as the 2.0L is working hard to shift 2.5 tons of un-aerodynamic SUV. Found we were not using enough to justify so “swapped” it and our BEV Zoe for a much roomier than Zoe and longer range BEV Nissan Leaf. Cheap to charge at home, decent to drive, all the tech you could need, decent range, and not a lot of money to buy used. And actually quite enjoyable to drive fast with its super low centre of gravity and ballistic acceleration in non-ECO mode.

And before the “virtue signalling” brigade turn up, I have a QP5 in the garage for those days when I want to emit some hydro-carbons. But the Leaf as a daily driver makes perfect sense for the journeys we use it for, and is actually cheaper to buy than the equivalent petrol or diesel used cars here because of the tax system. Plus it was used and so already built, at which point the choice is between either a used BEV or a used petrol/diesel both of which have already incurred the environmental cost of build, so I am just looking at the monetary and environmental costs to run. On that basis the BEV for us was a no brainer.

I’ve always thought that our next small daily would be an EV. We don’t have much choice down here, but the BMW i3 I see quite a lot of, so unless something better comes along I’ll probably get one of those a year or two old. I’ve got solar so I can charge it “free” for a large part of the year.

As has already been said, there is a long term strategy, where car ownership will become something only for the wealthy. London has already become a private playground for the super rich. The London Congestion charge will from 2025 (and who knows what Saddiq Khan will have put the charge to up to by then) become applicable to EV's, and when we are all driving an EV, see what the price of charging will go up too. All these private charging infrastructure companies are playing the long game. One they have a captive audience their greed for profits and as a result big director bonuses will be open for all to see!
