Palladium or Ruthenium?

Ok, time to see if we have a few scientists in our midst. I have been looking at the Maserati Store and there are a couple of pairs of cuff links that I have been pondering on:

http://www.maseratistore.com/gb_en/catalogsearch/result/?q=cuff+links#more2

so two questions:

1) Palladium / Ruthenium - can anyone explain the difference, in practical terms (yes, I have read the respective wikipedia entries); and

2) Branded cuff links - too much "look at me" or subtle enough that they are OK?

Comments welcomed!

Cheers

I'm with Rob - they look the same to me! On the question of taste, I think they are fine. I prefer the Gran Turismo ones personally!

So, both are metals from the same family as Platinum although Ruthenium is far more rare than Palladium. Both are used in an alloy composition to coat jewellery which is made from a less valuable metal or sometime to re-coat yellow gold to make it appear like platinum. The only real difference is that Palladium tends to appear more shiny than Ruthenium, which gives a more grey/slightly matt finish.

Confusingly, palladium costing contain ruthenium and vice versa, just in differing quantities.

Basically, there's no value difference, purely aesthetic.

I can make palladium alloy in our labs here and use it to "dip" worn or tired jewellery and make it appear new. Haven't done it for years but it's not complicated.

personally I am not a fan of any car branded clothes or accessories, its like they and you are trying too hard
for me it feels a bit much if u turn up in a Maserati cap , shirt or jacket and arrive in a Maserati.
Some people may call it passion for the Brand and while I understand , its not for me.

I have the same misgivings, hence the question. I have a nice key ring and mug but a christmas present tie has never been worn, even though it is subtle. Still worried the cuff links are too - look at me.

I think you may have answered your own question.

Haha, Not the same but sort of tenuous link,
Few years ago I took the kids to see a new superman film, sat in there before the lights go down and this lad comes in with a very pretty girlfriend, big guy, well toned etc, takes his jacket off and he only has a bloody Superman T shirt on, my son (6 or 7) points out the obvious, I fought really hard to stifle my laughing to the point of offering to go for popcorn!!!

Like I said tenuous!!!

In my opinion its a small step in the wrong direction. You wouldn't want to end up looking like this...
