Paint Thickness gauge

I was surprised to see how cheap these were - less than a tenner on the bay! are these any good - for a curious amateur, does it really pay to spend a little more and what do you get for a lot more?

The one measures in 1/10ths mm the other 1/10ths micron.

Not sure how much use one is that can only work at 0.1mm modern paints are quite thin.

Pity they don't tell you the thickness of clearcoat, or can they?

I don't know what the current situation is but in 1998/9 I was trained by Porsche/Glasurit in the Porsche paint application process (not putting it on myself I must say) and then they were down to 85μm total paint thickness; given that a human head hair is 80-120μm that is crazy. They argued they were using galvanised metal so the paint was nothing more than cosmetic! Normal bodyshop repairs back then were expected to be 200-400μm without any plop under the paint!

What use would a paint thicknesser be that only measures down to 100μm units???? even 10μm would be a little odd.

Guess you pays your money and get what you get...
