Just read in Autocar that Oxford city council have approved plans from August to start charging the ever beleaguered motorist. This time in order to 'catch' those motorists who have done their bit by buying PHEV's even they will be subject to charge. Interestingly those like me - Euro6 Ghibli Diesel, will pay a reduced tax, whilst as I understand it all pre Euro6 and petrol get to pay the in full.
However in my opinion, once they have run out of ICE owners to 'steal' from, they will then move onto EV's, as the environmentalists are already suggesting tyres and brakes from all vehicles produce harmful particles!
What a load of ****!!!

To be fair , tyre and brake dust is a pollutant , millions of tyres get worn out every year but the roads aren't 2" deep in rubber so we must be breathing it in

We're just going to have to face it , 2020 onwards the motorist is going to get shafted

Just as well Morse is not still driving his Jag around then. Would have made him even more grumpy.

You are talking about Oxford City Council. Every possible punitive measure applied to motorists with no allowances made.

Well the price of EV's is about to rocket! Cost of Copper has more than doubled on the world commodity markets over the last 12 months. So might take the shine of buying an EV for now. If there ever was a shine that is..

For once in my life I made a good financial move by replacing my leaking hot water cylinder last week with a new one I'd had for some time, took my old one down the scrap yard and got £63 for it which is about what I paid for my new one a couple of years ago.

I would have thought that the majority of the rubber particles and brake dust settles on the road surface and gets washed into the drains.

Shame they cant or dont find some way of collecting it and using it to fill in the never ending pot holes.

EVs still use tyres and brakes, though (although brakes to a lesser extent I guess with regenerative braking)

Sounds like the whole country eventually, back to the 1920's then. You either walk, ride a bike, or jump on a horse and cart..
For me, hopefully Its a Italian one!

I've had a discussion on tiktok with a tesla evangelist

As usual all they ever harp on about is the charging , never the purchase cost or maintenance

This was him trying to wind me up over maintaining an ICE car and the cost of mercedes parts

I drive a 2007 E280 , nothing wrong with it , everything works 45mpg

Everything works, until it doesn't

and if it stops working I've got £28,000 to fix it before I get to the cheapest tesla

Lol, won't take long to eat that up with maintenance and gas

thankfully I own a car not built by Elon so I can buy parts anywhere

Yeah, **** Elon. Making a car that hasn't needed service in 90K miles

What, no tyres, brakes bearings, bushes or safety checks in 90k miles , really

:Tires, yes. Brakes are still at 65%

but no safety checks in how long , a service isn't just about changing the oil

You're going to hate this: There doesn't need to be any. All diagnostics can be run remotely.

I've just googled tesla service and the schedule in the UK is 12 months 12,500 miles https://teslaowners.org.uk/kb/tesla-service-schedule

Yes, recommended service. As someone who worked in Service operations for Tesla, that was only added as a revenue arm

In the UK I service and check my car is safe and roadworthy, it has a mandatory MOT test every 12 months

:Less so concerned getting this checked by Tesla than I am about having any licensed mechanic do this.

And there we have it , Americans buy Tesla because the only maintenance they carry out is a regular oil change , electric cars don't need that so you can just drive them ,forever it seems

An example of American maintenance or lack thereof

Interestingly after reading about Oxford, I was made aware and then double checked what tfl and Sadiq Khan have got in store for the unfortunate sods that hoped to use the roads in London that they already pay Road tax for, and bought cleaner emissions vehicles hoping to escape the £15.00 seven day a week Congestion Charge. From October all PHEV,s that were exempt will now be subject to the charge, and the best bit I discovered, from 2025 the much lauded answer to extra driver taxation, and the saviour of the environment, the EV and just in case they take off also Hydrogen cars, all zero emission of course WILL ALSO HAVE TO PAY THE CHARGE!!!
All I can say, at least they are being honest about how they want to ban ALL cars in the future, and as you can see it's got bugger all to do with better air quality. As I've said before, the very rich are only too happy to pay the tax, as they will have London's roads to themselves, without all the peasants getting in the way.
It's like some kind of sick joke, that's actually fact.

Given USs desire to litigate at the drop of a hat I have always been shocked to see just how many piles of junk they have on the road over there... let alone cars over 3 years old that have never seen a safety check.
