Our cheap Coupe GT to do list

Thanks, great advice. I’ll check out your thread.

Out of interest has anyone removed the skyhook shocks and replace with the fixed rate ‘standard’ ones?
As our car is manual, the only thing the sport button does is stiffen the shocks, so we never push the button! Just a thought from me that it would probably be cost neutral to replace all 4 shocks with new standard ones, then sell the 3 good skyhook ones. Rather than buying one used replacement.
Presumably it would throw up a suspension fault on the dash?

Maser owners are a tight bunch...!
Dont hold your breath if you're hoping to get hundreds of pounds for your old Skyhook struts. You see them on eBay for +£300 but they never sell at that price - at least not this side of 2050 ! I was offered sub £300 for whole set of four FFS ! ( And peanuts for a perfect set of freshly powder coated wheels too...!! )
The KWs arent particularly cheap. There's talk of folk getting originals rebuilt- this must be a preferred option costwise Id have thought....
Yours being a manual car, switching off the Slyhook is a simple thing. Find a suitable Indy, unplug the Skyhook ECU, plug the OBD into SD3, from there you navigate a few screens and select the Sport mode-disabled- done !

I certainly wouldnt advise winging it in the hope the Skyhook error wont come up..Your funeral though.

Yea the market for used 4200 parts is naturally small. They made less than 15,000 of them and at least 1/3 have been scrapped and broken and the aftermarket is certainly not Golf GTi or Mustang GT level.

I don’t think think it’s being tight, it’s more to do with striking a balance between getting new shocks and the value of the car. Anticipating that, if one has failed, the other three may not be far behind. Buying new skyhook shocks at £850 + per corner on a car at this value, seems a bit daft to me. Selling the old ones to recoup some outlay is a no brainer, surely, rather than me being tight!

Adding also that I never press the sport button, this to me, makes it a sensible route to consider.

For what it’s worth though, I am giving equal consideration to buying a new skyhook shock, I’m considering all the options.

As per my previous post, the one person I could find that refurbed them, can’t do it anymore.

I’d love to be offered a set for £300 but it ain’t happened yet!! The cheapest used items I can find are £300+ from unknown sources, again adding weight to buying new, whether that be skyhook or not.

At no point did I suggest i was going to wing it and hope the error light wouldn’t come up! I was asking the question as research, as to whether I would need to factor in a trip to an Indy.

Do not forget about set up costs on the KWs you will need to take it to a capable geometry specialist and they will need the car for half a day at least... Then the springs will settle and you will have to take it back for the ride height to be adjusted again. Not long until you are back to the same price of buying new replacement Sachs skyhook struts.

I wast saying you were tight. Re read my post, it might help you understand my meaning...but if the hat fits...;)
Same with respect the error light. Not that you were suggesting it won’t come up, but posts in the thread, ( from Phil Garner ) which I would deter you from trying s all..
No good deed an all that...

.......you are back to the same price of buying new replacement Sachs skyhook struts.

And they will still suck. And you still have the ageing electronics that can go wrong, taking you back to the dealers and SD3 to diagnose, and then repair or replace sensors etc....?
KWs are a good option IMO, and future proofs the car, insulating you from bad roads and big bills. Fully adjustable. Fully rebuildable. No brainer....:clapps:

K Ws is a good option and future proofs the car in many ways. Fully adjustable. Fully rebuildable. Non digital fit and forget...

I agree with you but it is important to be aware of all cost aspects

It is worth it in the long run but if you are going to keep the car for 5 years maximum then a brand new replacement sachs strut would still be doing your bit for keeping that car alive

Ha, maybe I am just being a bit tight! think the missus would be happy if I stopped throwing money at cars!

All good suggestions, thanks.

Brake pipes and the small patch repair on the front subframe done. Re MOT’d and back on the road.
Shock has gone down as an advisory, so I’ve got a bit of time to decide on which path to take.

Well, my plan was to take the 4200 off the road, once I had procured a decent batch of spares to bring some areas of the car up to scratch and I’d freed up some space in the garage.

Unfortunately this plan was brought forward slightly over the Xmas break, when the footwells filled up with coolant!

Many thanks to the heater matrix ‘how to’ on this forum (I would post the link to it if I knew how). The guide made it a much more straightforward job that it otherwise might have been!
The interior is now nearly back together, but as it’s off the road, I’m going to do a few of the other jobs now as well

I’d recommend a thorough check of the door lock functions due to the location of the door lock/unlock ECU directly under the heater matrix hose connections.

Thanks, I was surprised to see the protective film! I’ve checked all the electrics since reassembly, and all seems good :goodnews:

I also took a bit of time out to cleaning off some stickiness from the switch gear etc. before putting it back together. The ‘hard’ plastics come up a treat. For the soft buttons I’ve gone for the 80’s white button look to get rid of the stickiness for the time being, I will get them redone at some point in the future.

Top job, love the fact the table still appears to be laid, some people play board games after dinner, others put some cardboard down and get on with some Maserati refurbishment.
God help your wife if you ever have gearbox issues :D

Nice one and first time I have seen Stella in on the action.

Ha! Stella was purely medicinal, to keep the fumes from meths at bay.

I assumed you had run out of Stella and turned to the meths because of Mas refurbishment.
