Ok - not sure I can stay a Maser-hobo. Mental help needed!

Hey guys,

As you know, I sold the Strad to Stan (Slay) back in November and up to that date, I have always had a Maserati since the end of 2004.

14 years is not bad! Bought all my cars new (mug!) but now I am sitting here reading SM thinking,,, “bloody badge has got under my skin like my Subaru badge” (no jokes please).

So I am doing a start-up out of Zurich in Quantative finance (please don’t fall asleep just yet) and my plan is to copy Athol and go FF (MY’15) next year once we are growing well.

We are coming out of the winter (ok don’t want to tempt fate yet) but find myself looking at my Forester and thinking “the weather is too nice to take you out”..

Now the kids are claiming that they both can’t get in the Evora at the same time so I have been ragging around this week (literally and having much fun) in my plethora of hot hatches and Loti (never sure if I can use that plural) but I miss a Maserati.

I can’t go back to a Granturismo (one too many) but I have always hankered (as Ewan may remember) after a QPV GTS.

I absolutely think they are the most beautiful Maserati bar an Indy (we all have skewed perspectives) and I prefer their looks to the facelift GT S...

I don’t like what they did with the exterior of the facelift but then the redemption is the 4.7 engine, exhaust sound and the better centre console.

I really want the GTS but keep thinking that I would miss the 4.7 grunt (I had the same engine in my GS and really felt it was underpowered) but could I love the uglier younger sister?? (in my humble)......

Please can the alter of SM provide me with some light and guidance.....

Stu

Sorry I can’t assist with this one, after missing out on yours I eventually found a Strad at the right time and oh boy I see why the badge got to you (not helping I guess) you’ve got to own the badge in one form or another and hope you find your next practical (ish) toy soon.

Get an order in for an Alfieri; allegedly it is going into production.... when do you retire?

Face lift QP GTS has to be the one. For me one f Maserati's best. Currently three for sale...well 4 if you count that red delivery mile one but you hVe like red outside and garish red inside .....well red everywhere ......the two that Wattie has posted and another silver one at a Lotus dealer. That grey one is lovely but the silver one at JCT has to be worth a look at 24k as they are a respected dealer. So much car for the money and Maseratis best kept secret......

Like you the badge got under my skin and I am on my 4th - QP V S, 2xGT S and now the QP V GTS - which has to be my favourite- effortless long distance cruiser with the family and it can lift its skirts when needed - Oh and did I mention the noise? I also had an FF before this car - and the one point I would make is that people smile and like peeps more in the Maser than they did in the FF - oh and some of the peeps in the Ferrari owners clubs....well let’s just say they aren’t all petrolheads...

Good luck - it took me nearly a year to find mine and with Apple car play installed it’s a dream of a car

I had the same quandary recently and sadly went XJL SuperSport.

However I had made my mind up that I would have gone facelift 4.7 GTS rather than 4.2. I just felt the 4.7's still were a bit heavy on price compared to the XJL I bought and still had a way to fall

Part of my model around the cars I buy or sell is heavily against deprecation as it is the only way I can achieve what I do. I have to limit the damage of depreciation or my numbers don't work.

I will get a facelift 4.7 GTS when they drop under 20k.

The one thing that surprised me was how different the tuning is it seems of the 6 Speed ZF box on the XJL compare to the QP I had. The XJL shifts much quicker and the QP felt nowhere near as quick and quite sluggish in comparison. It could have been my car but it was a big difference.

I don't see how you can go wrong with a facelift 4.7 though. That would be my choice.

Shame they never put the MC Shift Auto software in it as in the GT. Or even the MC Shift manual box. Both would have suited the car I'm sure.

I agree, pre face lift is much prettier but personally prefer the 19 inch wheels. Can't comment on the differnce in driving dynamics though

Stu you are a lost cause and you should feed your habit.

Doctor Conaero prescribes a 4.7 GTS/Strad

Can’t go back to a GTS or Strad. Had too many and just sold a perfectly good Strad to Slay so that would be a total waste of time, effort and money.

If I get anything in the interim, it would be a QP GTS or GT S.

My wife wants a Grancab. Me? Hmmmm, meh...

Thing is, I have cars that are dynamically more fun to drive around where I live and the Granturismo is just too big, heavy and unwieldy. Fixed rate dampers help (hate Skyhook) but can’t overcome laws of physics.

So I think and Auto box QP for pootling around just sounds more appealing (did I really just say that?).....

You appear to be bored/dismissive of most modern Masers …. perhaps a Lazareth would fit the bill.
The family would have to make do with something else but could be fun:

Do not like the light grey or silver with dark wheels. Does not suit the proportions in my opinion.

I just think this is prettier. Really like the front end and rear end. Also the side skirt does not have that ridge that they put on the facelift

I think this looks lovely. Been for sale for ages.....as most QP's seem to be. Looks in great condition in the photos. Only thing for me is 2k more gets a 4.7 which is what I would have to go for. But if you prefer the look of the early cars then o for it as its a totally if fervent car from the Sport GT. There is a private sale black one at 19995 with cream interior on AT as well which again gas been for sale for a while and started at 24k I believe....Dropped to 20k then last week went up to 21995 and this week back down to 19995.

Joking aside, I am not dismissive of modern Maserati’s but am I a bit bored of them?

Well, considering your point,,,, yes I most propably am if I consider them a “drivers” car for me.

BUT if they are a nice place to be to waft down an A or M road with an auto box, then I think I would perceive differently.

Certainly the Stad for me is billed as a lighter weight car with a cracking fast gearbox and with fixed rate dampers so yes it should be a “drivers” car in my eyes (why reduce the weight otherwise?) but it is not in my opinion.

I think it’s because I have been able to “indulge” in a multitude of cars that derive huge amounts of satisfaction for me without having to drive like a t*t on my local roads at speeds that are death-inducing.

I suppose that Strad for me has a personality issue as it was not what it was supposed to be and I suppose yes, I was bored and diss appointed.
