And now for something completely different!
I am standing in Watford General Hospital A&E with my 93 year old mother who normally lives in a care home (£8,000+ pm) who has dementia.
For our £8k she fell off the hoist, and was brought to her local NHS Hospital.
I can only describe it as medieval, or as if there was a war on, with the corridors full of beds. They have no idea how long the results of the scan they performed will take, and most of the staff say the NHS is broken! And yes they all want to go on strike!
As I said, something completely different!

Both my wife and I got Covid in Denmark recently. Unfortunately she had to be taken to hospital because of stomach complications by ambulance. Exactly 4 minutes from my call to the ambulance pulling up outside my mothers house. Within 30 mins of arriving at the hospital she was assessed and in a bed on a ward.
It looked more like a hotel suite with a 50 inch tv, pull out bed for over night stayers and nice oak flooring and furniture.
Fast forward one week and we are back in the UK. GP sent nurses to take her bloods at our home. Nurse was not happy with her blood pressure and told us to go to A&E because an ambulance would take 5 hours… we sat there at A&E for exactly 5 hours, only to be told to go home… and that the regional nurse was over cautious and not doing her job. End result? Back to square one with the GP.
The NHS is a total joke compared to European countries. I cannot believe how the U.K. has become a third world country.
Rant over, going private now.

My sympathies! From what I’ve seen, if we can improve to third world it would be a step up!

I didn’t want to sound too harsh.. but plastic seats, all taken so that 50% of people have to stand up for hours waiting, including potential patients being quite ill…. The mind boggles.
Fortunately I am Danish and my wife is Dutch, so we are able to retire in a country that can and actually do look after the elderly or people that are ill….
We have both enjoyed living in the UK immensely and met each other here, paid our taxes and so on.
However, I would not like to to retire and/or become ill in this country all things considered.
I suspect we will move on as we mature.

My very elderly father went downhill on Tuesday evening, I called an ambulance which arrived in 15 minutes. We waited about an hour to be seen by a doctor and were in a spanking new resuss area within 2 hours of arriving. His care at the William Harvey, Ashford was excellent. Despite all the scare stories. Maybe it was because he was in acute care, but the nurses were highly trained and plentiful. Unfortunately he passed away in his sleep this morning. My sisters and I have nothing but praise for the NHS, it was a positive experience.

Oh, so sorry to read this and so soon after your mum as well.
Thoughts and prayers are with you x
Some comfort in that he was so well cared for in his final hours.
