Newbie question - MC shift

I was thinking the same way myself...to instal valve override switch, to be able to open valves in normal mode as the sound is addictive :tomato7:.
But found out that I really drive 99% in sport mode, so in fact no need for this.
And ofcourse on MC Shift valves are open all the time when in sport, not just over 3000 rpm or so as with ZF box.
The sport cats will come when the original ones need changing.
Is the sound much different with Larini cats?
I don't like the sound of X piped GTS and would like to keep it close to stock sound also with sport cats.

I have an additional mode or two on mine having installed a valve over-ride remote. In normal sport I get the audio benefits of sport mode (which are, let’s face it, far more important than quicker shift times) without the harder suspension.

Oh, and install Larini sports cats. This week. I waited 2 years. Don’t be me.

I do appreciate the sound heads up but I’m running test pipes into a titanium race exhaust on my 360 (spits flames) so the GTS is meant to be my civilised everyday runaround/touring car and with that in mind I will probably keep it stock as far as the sound goes..

Sounds to me that the MC Shift isn't mu h different from the MC Auto Shift, apart from the lack of a clutch.
Happy to be educated

Fair enough ! Still consider sports cats, opens up the performance

Recommend you educate yourself by driving one. Quite different, more engaging, more eager due to lower final drive, rubbish in auto, only drive in manual and sport. - 2mpg. Richard Grace sells lots of both and can knowledgeably take you through pros and cons.

I honestly don’t think it’s that bad in auto.. I mean it’s not ZF smooth like my Alpina B5 but it’s perfectly useable and agreeable if you’re just going somewhere and don’t want to think and don’t want the harder sport suspension on.. that’s the only downside I think.. you can’t run in sport mode with soft suspension on bumpy UK roads. It’s not an issue abroad as roads are far smoother but I do think it’s an issue in the UK.

  • do not make brisk starts, GT is not meant for that - just start normaly in 1st, when the clutch fully engages (around 1.600 rpm) than go with sport driving and shifting - GT is very heavy car and would make a lot of stress to clutch when trying some brisk launches.

ooops! I don't think I've ever not made a brisk start. I seem to be averaging 1% clutch where every 1000Kms too, so far so good (something is breaking as I write this, obviously).

Enjoy the car, drive it like you stole it.

Already have a MC auto shift, lend me yours and I'll report back ;)

Standing still in 1st gear with foot on brake wil not wear clutch.

Is that so? I have always been told on my F430 (which seems to have a similar designed single plate clutch than the GTS) that it actually wasn’t recommended as staying in 1st fear at standstill still meant the flywheel was being stressed while keeping the plate open. Thoughts? It would be nice to get some opinions on that as I am constantly shifting back to neutral at red lights

Can't see how it would be. Clutch is open. Flywheel is spinning freely.

I think you're putting more strain the release bearing but no idea how much that's going to be an impact but putting it in neutral (assuming the same set up as the 4200 cc) actually engages the flywheel.

The release bearing tends to fail before the clutch on the GTS, I am led to believe. But even out of gear, for the first 30 seconds, the clutch is still open and on the release bearing, after that the clutch closes and the gearbox spins out of gear.

Taking the car out of gear at the lights means that if there is a bit of drag on the clutch then the torque tube spins rather than the clutch dragging.

I've also convinced myself that when not giving it beans pulling both paddles to Neutral when slowing down helps with clutch wear. Those extra rev matched down-shifts seem a bit of a waste and not really necessary when pootling.
I also knock it into Neutral when stationary just in case there is a bit of drag.

Interesting, I was explained from an MD and from an indy that brisk starts or better say fast launches are not recomended for a MC Shift, because the car is really heavy and clutch would wear much more than needed.
How do you start, just mash the throttle from standstill?
I do first a little bit of throttle to move the car and when the revs are a little higher (as I know clutch is fully closed at about 1600 revs) than mash it.
