Newbie Q - engine shutoff alarm sound (normal?)

Purchased a beautiful 3200 GT which drives very well so far - no worries at all and pure joy. Should have done this much earlier ;-)

One quick question - apologies, this will sound very naive, but it concerns an alarm so I thought I'd better check.

When I shut off the engine the car emits a 15sec alarm beeping sound. It doesn't do it every time but nearly every time (90%) and right after I turn the ignition key backwards and the engine shuts off.

Is it normal? If so, what does it signify? The user's manual does not mention this. Btw - none of the warning lights on the dash come on in conjunction with the sound.

Thanks for your guidance,

Boris

If it's an auto, you are maybe not in park..? Have you let the turbo's cool down a bit before switching off..?? Is it a steady note, or intermittant beep..?

Most likely, it comes from your putting the car in "N" rather than "P" when you switch off the engine.... I did it sometimes as well, just put it back to "P", the alarm will go off...

Hi, and welcome. Mine emits 3 lots of 3 beeps when shut off. I think, it's something to do with the stereo in my case, though stand to be corrected. Somewhere someone must have a list of what they all mean, I have never managed to unearth anything.

Thanks very much for the reply - It's in P when I shut off the engine. The beep is a continuous tone that just stops after 20secs or so. ... Interesting thought on the turbos; heard that before from a dealer. However: the beeping would happen equally after a sporty drive or after a brief back and forth, reparking the car without properly warming it up... I tried letting the car cool down for 1-2mins. Still the alarm would sound...

... And thanks for the welcome - much appreciated!

Sorry Boris, forgot to say welcome to the forum.
If you do not get any warning lights ( presume they all work), then maybe it is the Radio Security Alarm being triggered. A lot depends on the equipment fitted, is it a standard radio fitted from new, or aftermarket. Do you get a red light on the radio at the same time? If the car is in Park, when you switch on does it say "P" on the dash? Does the car always start in "P", reason being is that there is a small switch on the "P" position.
What does the outside temperature read on the dash, if it is low, it could be a faulty sensor and it thinks there may be ice..??
Cheers

Hey Robert, thanks for your reply and welcome:

++ radio is Becker Mexico from original spec
++ will check if I get a red light from radio (but haven't noticed so far)
++ P on dash and I start from P
++ am in Joburg South Africa. Outside temp is still a lovely 25c so no ice anytime soon :)

Thanks, guys, for all the responses. One thing I take away is that no-one seems particularly worried at this sound so I guess I'm good to keep driving.

Best,
B

Boris,
The temp sensor may be faulty and reading close to ice around 2 degC, then you get an alarm, check the reading on the dash..??
