Hi, thought I’d better introduce myself rather than just lurking. I bought a 2003 manual 4200 back in October having sold my F 456 after 5 years, and I have to say I much prefer the 4200. Well I would say that on here, or I’d probably be barred before I joined... :) I have a couple of other modern classics too, a Clio V6 and a Skyline R33 GTR and so the MaseratI neatly fills the GT gap left by the 456. Love the forum already and look forward to hopefully meeting up later this year.

Welcome along.
My first Ferrari was a 456 in TDF Blue and I took part in the Guinness World Record at Silverstone in 2012.
Loved the V12 on Tubis.
The 4200 you can use everyday easier than the 456 though.

That certainly was a good day and one of my Automotive highlights.
Be careful with these lot though as I went to Let Mans and less than a week after I bought a 360 Modena F1.
Crazy times but another memory.

Great choice Paul and welcome to the "small and merry band of brothers". Minority Club is certainly a great way to describe it! Your Maserati is 1 of 214 Right hookers (assuming it is) ever made out of 1078 units worldwide of both left and right hand drive (3 pedal kind). Now that is pretty special and enjoy it. They are a fabulous car and with mileage under your belt with it, you'll quickly realise how accomplished a car they are and how much greater they are than the sum of their parts!

Hi Paul, welcome to SM! You have a great collection, I really wanted a R34 GTR but ended up with a manual 4200 mostly due to R34 prices going mad 3-4 years ago... love the Clio V6 also I have only ever seen 2 real ones and when I was a teenager my friend turned his red 1.4l into a V6 replica using a body kit which is funny on reflection :)

On paper the 4200 and F456 share a huge amount of similarities, the Maserati is a little more modern and advanced which reflects its era... the equivalent Ferrari was the F550 which is a different animal from the same designer

Hi All, thanks for welcoming messages, by far the most I’ve received on joining a forum . :thumb3: I’ll try and answer some if the questions albeit in no particular order.
Why a manual... ? I have nothing against paddle shifters in general, in fact I am very impressed by the one in my wife’s FType, but for me I wanted something still slightly “old school”. Must admit I didn’t realise they were so rare though.

How does it compare to the 456 ? Feels half the size and weight, and sounds nicer too. I spent 5 years trying to release the V12 howl with various permutations of decats, rear box deletes etc... but other than spending 2k+ on a Tubi or Capristo it just wasn’t happening. It just feels more nimble and more planted... and of course more modern, but not too modern.

Which is more fun Clio v6 or R33 GTR ? Both absolutely brilliant... probably “keepers” for me. Had the R33 nearly ten years, pretty much stock, Clio about 5 years and can’t think of anything I’d replace them with.... except a McLaren MP4-12c but need the lottery numbers to come in ! As for R34 prices as commented by Fifty yes they did go, and still are mad... the R33 seem a bit unloved compared to the R32 and R34.

Back to the 4200 and all good so far, apart from an intermittent dip headlight which I have already found on here is likely to be a dodgy connection or the ballast so a bit of fiddling with the wheels off soon is needed.

As for driving it I love it but struggle occaisionally to make precise changes, the spring across the gate seems a bit off centre to me, but I’m sure I’ll improve with practice.... maybe that’s why most have the CC. :p
Thanks again guys...

When you get a chance and if you haven't already seen it.......Checkout the You tube video by Davide Cironi when he tried a manual 4200. A really nice video and the noise of that engine......GRRRRRR....It is fabulous!! Yeah when you think how many were made and then that V8 when it comes alive, what's not to like? A Brilliant, Sassy, bomb of a car that's just that bit different to others...Enjoy your beast and do share some pics!
