New owner 4200gt manual

Ok I have done it, bought a Maserati 4200GT, so I will be lurking around this forum a bit more preparing myself for any future problem and looking for the solutions.

Its a 2003, black manual car, 42,000 miles well look after by the last owner who has it for 11 years. MOT history looked good and I got an independent garage inspection done. I've almost done more miles getting it home than it has done in the last year. 280 miles of sat in traffic jams around the Midlands, then staying to a steady 70mph on the M1, then a bit faster up the A1 to Durham. It did 22mpg if anyone is interested.

So here are my first questions.

  1. what spares should I be stocking up on?
  2. Can anyone recommend a good code reader /reset-er for it?
  3. Any good ideas to update the radio /CD, multi-CD and satnav system (I have read a few threads on it)
  4. Any driving advise, ie don't clutch in as you start it? Etc

Welcome Rob
You will have to post some pictures.
I've owned my 2003 Spyder with 3 pedals since March 2018. Been very pleased with the car, only trouble I had was a noisy release bearing and squeaky pilot bearing last September at 69k mileage and got them replaced asap. The clutches themselves can last a very long time, some Americans have had over 100k mileage before a clutch needed changing, it's normally the release bearing that packs in first. Put it in neutral at the traffic lights, avoid slipping it best you can etc. The music system is **** but there's some great threads on here to help you. The code reader to turn things like air bag lights off is quite expensive, check your local garages if any of them have Texa diagnostic equipment, when you find one it might be cheaper paying them rather than buying the kit yourself.
The other day a brand new clutch for a 4200 manual came up on ebay Buy It Now £750 which was a bargain but think it's now gone.
Happy motoring
Mark

Good choice...!
Hope you dont have too many issues. After a lack of use you might find find a few kinks need working out as they pop up but they arent too bad a car..
You can get cheapy bluetooth plug in dongles that are smart phone friendly for OBII diagnostic stuff..otherwise they do need specific equipment. Your local indy is a good bet but not the only option, as indicated....

Good luck.

Oh , and post some pics...!

Welcome to the fold. Pics are a must please

Go for the cheapest ODB2 reader either wired or Bluetooth (can vet stung on the app for the Bluetooth version)

The car needs a special ferrari diagnostic to access all the functions and CPUs and it costs mega bucks therefore only the specialist independents have it

You will love it!
Would be interesting to know how much you got it for. Mine is a 43,000 mile, red 2004 manual, so hard to know what they are actually worth these days.
Would love to see a picture.

Greetings, welcome and enjoy - nice drive home by the sounds of it. Although, I can assure you, few will be interested in the mpg
The favoured option here is to add a Loudlink, Parrot, or similar, to the existing system with navigation by phone, etc.
There is, however, scope to move the existing system elsewhere freeing up space for something more modern.
Both screen & NIT can be repositioned yet retained within the Canbus system - without which you'll lose illumination of the central console.
What you could then do with the available space is as much a question of how much you want to spend and how much time you have to do it.

Thanks for replies, I all ready have a ODB2 reader, so that will have to do for basic diagnostics and engine code clearing. 2 trips to the shops today, so a bit boring, then tonight took it for a drive in the rain, yep you got to take it easy.

I paid £11,750 for it in a private sale, not bad I think. Last owner 11 years, 3 owners in total, full service history and MOT history looked very good.

I have been watching the market for nearly a year now and would say it is not looking good for selling with the future economic uncertainty. I though might as well have the money in a nice car rather than earning almost no interest in a bank.

Originally I was attracted to the 3200, what's not to like, twin turbos, but decided engine maintenance was going to take up a lot of time and with some parts seem to not be available.

Welcome Rob.
Three pedal manual transmission. Biased I know, but excellent choice.

If it's any consolation, mine has done almost three times the mileage that yours has and it's still going strong, although it is getting difficult to get some parts now but Trident Spares, David Askew and Ebay are all a good source of obsolete bits.

42k miles is not even run In. Welcome to the forum. I have a new wheel bearing available for the 4200 if you're interested. I had a 4200 for the last 8 years but now in a GT SPORT.

Hi Rob
That sounds like a bargain!! great choice going for a PROPER manual box! I have had mine for 4 years now and am still in my honeymoon period with it!! We are in a bit of a minority on here as many prefer the CC, each to their own. As others before said, lets have a look at her!
Nibby, I was following that clutch also, but then decided to leave it as my clutch is ok at the mo. Just bought a new indoor car cover from Tufan so I would be grounded for a month!!

Regarding a code reader I have a wired 'ultragauge' installed in mine.
As well as the obd2 stuff you can configure it to constantly display speed, water temp, volts etc more reliably than the instrument gauges.

I think the market is very poor for sellers at the moment with un-known economic uncertainty right ahead, I have watched a lot of Maserati Coupe come up for sale and appear to not sell for months, then appear months later still for sale. Dealers are not able to offer much more in terms of warranty etc considering the age of the cars.

Seems like a very well built car and so stable at speed, well please so far.

Not really, I would say it's about right IMO. I have been watching prices quite closely as I am thinking of buying a 4200 myself. Recently saw advertised a 58k mile 2002 car for £8.5k which I thought was a bargain. I'm looking at face-lift cars so didn't interest me.

They are very neat. I had one, but my car didn't like the constant CANBUS polling and would make the dash / button illumination go off every second.
No one else seemed to have issues, though

No don't have that issue, can't remember off hand the polling frequency but something like every second, and you can set it to poll faster but they do state if faster it can give problems with early obd2 systems.
It's certainly interesting for the displayed speed on the ultragauge for example is lower and more accurate than the analog speedo. Having a digital temperature display you can see the exact temp the cooling fans cut in and out. Etc etc.
Well worth it in my opinion.
