New Maserati planned

So, shall we hazard a guess as to the format of this car, I think I know, as discussed in the sister thread to this?

I recon, Alfa have been forced to shelve the new 169, and the model has been passed to Maserati. The Alfa 16X models have always been brilliant, but been over priced, with a terrible of history of depreciation, the worst I seem to remember.

There has been rumours of the 169 being based on the underpinnings of the Chrysler 300C and there has also been load of talk about Alfa producing their own V6, not that junk GM unit, but i think the new 169/Maserati will be a V6 and will be a reworked yank V6, leaving Alfa using 4 pot turbos.

Just my 2 penneth, but I do follow Alfa very closely, probably more so that Maserati, in regards to the gossip behind the scene, as I do hanker after an Alfa, but feel there glorious V6 days are gone now.

So here is my guess, 4 door sedan RWD 169 based Chrysler 300C platform with a reworked yank V6, with looks to die for, hum, a little worried to be honest that the brand is being down graded in the pursuit of more volume.

Matt,

I remember Jaguar enthusiasts expressing similar concerns with the introduction of the Ford Mondeo derived X Type.

I have just done a little digging, and it appears that it may be a GS replacment and Spyder, here are some mule shots from 2008:

Here are some pics of the 8C Competizione testing alongside a Maserati mule. Rumours suggest that Maserati are working on a smaller model similar in size to the old Coupe / Spyder, sharing a lot of technology with the 8C Competizione. It would represent a real successor to the GranSport and GranSport Spyder.

This would make my decade if it were true, but I do feel that it will turn out to be an M5 competitor, and not a spyder, well, not initially, but hey, what do I know!

So if the above is true, it would be a light weight and smaller version of the GT with the same lump....so do you think they are planning to phase our the 4.2 GT, just pushing the 4.7, then slip the new model in its place. It does not add up really.

I heard recently from a good source that Ferrari were planning to use more of Maserati's technology, and that the newest models were already doing this ...

The car i saw , was all disguised in black plastic was around the size of a merc 2 seater converible similar to the 8c size but different , went in and out of the factory gate 3 or 4 times about half an hour apart so was definately being tested

I also fear that Maserati are watering down the marque to gain mass appeal, which whilst bringing some much needed cash to the company, in the long rum threatens the exclusivity which is one of the main reasons I love the car so much

Lots of the reports are saying a 5 series rival but I do know Maserati were testing a 2 seater convertable as well.

It would seem strange if your entry level car was a cab. If they are planning a German BMW Merc rival that means they will have to offer a diesel!

The rumoured Alfa V6 is said to be offered in a diesel FFS noooooooooooo!

They surely can't use the 4.2 v8 as it would waste the GT performance wise and kill it.

It would make sense to be a 4 door, but diesel...never....The car will never be a 'shall I buy a 5 series or Maserati' type car as it will appeal to a different type of buyer....It will broaden the appeal but wtill will be pretty exclusive.
