Purchased a 2001 3200gt 2 weeks ago - looks and sounds great. Good job I took some photos because it has been in the local garage for over a week having an oil leak fixed. The leak is due to a damaged crossmember cutting into the oil cooler pipe by the radiator. Managed to source a replacement crossmember off ebay which the garage is fixing. They are also checking out the engine management light.

Welcome you have found the right place, the 3200 experts will be along later.

In the meantime can we see some photos?

It’s a brave man that buys a 3200 with an engine warning light on. Fingers crossed for you, as when they are on-song, they are a lovely car.

Hi, being 2001 it should be OBD compliant , the crossmember must have taken a pretty hefty clout to push it that far up and back to cut the cooler hose, i wouldn't be suprised if it hasn't taken the AC condenser out too. Hope it gets sorted quickly for you. Oh yeah, pictures :)

A Ewan, bet its been a long time since you bought a car with your heart not your head..
Bet your old lovely Quatroporte was the last one!

No Dave. No one buys a V8 Westfield with their head!!! Or a RHD bi-turbo Venturi. Or a Ferrari 400 in need of restoration, or, or, or, etc. But I suppose a 3200 with a warning light is fine if you are just going to park it up to keep the mileage low. A problem with the engine only matters if you actually want to drive it.;)

it is beautiful though!

Thanks for the compliments. It’s a great looking car but it’s not quite sorted yet and I need some advice please.

Firstly, the engine management light is still showing. A lot of historic codes due to the car not being run much in the past few years, dead battery etc were cleared and have not reappeared. Used a friend’s Launch crp129 scanner. The only errors now showing are re the knock sensors on bank1 and bank 2. I plan to replace the knock sensors plus whichever hoses etc. you guys recommend at the same time. Any advice welcome.

Secondly, the idle speed appears to be too high. In Park it hunts between approx. 1000 and 1200 rpm, in Drive it is steadier at around 1000 rpm but this still seems too fast to me. Can the idle speed be adjusted? I have seen nothing to suggest that it can. And can anything stop the hunting? The throttle body has already had the position sensor upgrade, so short of cleaning it I don’t know what else to try - unless changing some air hose or gasket might cure an air leak. Again any advice welcome.

I am guessing that there may be other error codes which the Launch reader can’t pick up. My local garage had similar issues with their machine and I haven’t taken it to a specialist because, up to press, I haven’t been confident enough to drive the car any distance. Can anyone recommend an obd2 scanner, of reasonable cost, which can read Maserati codes? Multiecuscan software has been mentioned elsewhere on the forum.

Hi , The inlet manifold needs to come off so when i did mine i replaced knock sensors , starter motor , re-sealed the inlet manifold bottom cover and replaced the coolant hoses with the Roose silicone ones, all refitted with new seals. The idle speed @ around 1000rpm in drive appears correct, the hunting is most likely a vac leak or failed one way valve into the manifold, there are a few , again these can be checked/replaced when the manifold is off (there is a vac line + y piece underneath it) also check the brake booster kaiser valve , access will be easier when its apart. I recently changed the front two O2 sensors that made a noticable difference in the overall steadiness and smoothness of the engine so i would consider these if they've not been changed yet. Ive not had a problem reading error codes using a cheapy obd scanner, its a 2001 year so would have thought yours would be the same? This all sounds a bit drastic but a few of the parts are generic to other car makes ie starter, knock sensors, O2 sensors ,kaiser valve so it being a case of "while your in there you may as well".... good luck :)

@Lozzer I'm getting a "hissing" from the brake pedal which indicates some sort of vacuum leak IIRC - these generic kayser valves would be from where? TIA
