Need urgent help...

Hi all,

I’ve just gone to take my Gransport out of the garage to pack for Le Mans and have a major problem.

Car starts fine, but when I stick it into gear and press the accelerate it moves about an inch, big clang, won’t budge after that and feels like the handbrake has fused...

If I try to reverse it’s the same.

I’ve tried to push the car in neutral and it won’t budge. I’ve also tried to rev the engine and get it to move, but it just won’t budge...

It also smells like something is burning.

Any ideas?

I have read you have to be careful not to shear it - lots of gentle back forth on and off is what I did.

The burning is probably the clutch because you’ve revved it and it can’t move.

Sounds like the handbrake has jammed on and then broken. If that’s the case only option is to jack it up and get the wheels and brakes off.

Have been rocking it back and forward, but it’s not moving... I think I’m screwed...

By some miracle have managed to free it up with repeated rocking to and fro...

Awesome but I’d want to make sure the linings havent detached from the backings like Catman said. At the very least jack it and spin the wheel to make sure there’s nothing loose in there.

Have been for a quick spin up and down the road and it feels absolutely fine - what should I listen for if I jack it and spin the wheel?

Something loose inside the brake, if the lining has broken off it’ll be scraping and will probably clunk as you change rotation from forward to back. They’ll be a bit of drag, that’s normal.

You’ll know something’s not right if you can hear it.

Will the LSD stop you from rotating the wheels by hand even if jacked up?

Im glad it was not clutch tang!!!!

Have jacked both sides and there is a clunk as it changes from forwards to backwards...

Now the dilemma is what do I do? Car feels fine to drive, but really don’t want to screw it more than I already have...

Never had a problem with the LSD on stands

I'd take the disk off that side and remove any loose brake lining, go without a handbrake but take chocks if you have them. TELL THEM ON THE FERRY you have no handbrake and they can tether it for you.

Is that not with both rear wheel off the ground though?

Don't run it with no shoes on as I only moved mine a few yards and it ate the handbrake mechanism in there because there were no shoes to keep it in place!

Never heard of an LSD failure on one of these but they all have handbrake shoes de-laminate at some point

Can you locate the clunk? If it’s from the centre of the car it’ll be the diff/drivetrain and entirely normal. If it’s from the wheel you may have lost the handbrake lining.

Put one hand on the diff/transaxle case and use the other to turn the wheel if the clunk is play in the drive train you’ll feel it with your hand
