Nasty Engine Rattle

That title is enough to give anyone reading shivers...let alone the owner!

I came home and fired up from cold and allowed my usual 1 min at idle. I have a 4.2L 2009 so the cam variators may be an issue. That said this lasted 3 min. It sounded like something was literally loose in the engine. After 3 min the engine disappeared. Shortly after this I recorded the follow (which still sounds a bit 'tinny' to me):

The engine disappeared! Gulp.....

Variators would rattle on initial start up and would have been doing it for some time to still rattle after 3 mins

As far as I was aware, variators only rattle on the initial start up as the oil then gets to where it's needed? This could be something else, fingers crossed cheaper..
