My Ferrari 348

As requested, some info about my 348.

Purchased it in 2005. It's a Ferrari 348 GTB. One of only 14 GTB's imported into the UK and the only black one. The GTB's had some suspension modifications and 20bhp more than the earlier TS/TB models.

If you believe that Ferrari's should not be modified and should remain as they left the factory, then please do not read on as you will get angry/annoyed/upset.:cool:

The 348 started out standard, but I got the modding bug and over the last few years have made a few changes. These include....

  • Installed Ferrari 360 Carbon race seats
  • Scroth racing harnesses
  • 360 Challenge steering wheel
  • Carbon interior
  • Ferrari 355 wheels with 15mm front/25mm rear spacers
  • Hill engineering spacers
  • Front splitter
  • Carbon heat shields
  • Tubi sports exhaust system
  • Hyperflow sports cats
  • Silicon hoses for water
  • Used to have a 430 Scuderia stripe
  • Changed the colour from metallic black to plain gloss black
  • Changed indicator lenses from orange to clear
  • Replaced headlights with HID lights
  • Replaced the plastic bonnet vent for a 355 metal vent
  • AP Racing 6 pot calliper brake discs at the front
  • Had the wheel arches rolled
  • Replaced the 348 GTB badge with a 348 Challenge badge (Ferrari purists hated that!!!)
I also did an engine out cambelt with a friend of mine (he did most of the work though!!!) and we ended up with a significant increase in performance. Around 5 seconds per lap faster at North Weald airfield.

Currently, myself and Raj from Adesso Performance are taking apart and rebuilding a Le Mans race engine. It's one of 6 engines that were raced at Le Mans in 1993/1994 in privateer 348's. The engines themselves were specially made by Ferrari. It is actually a 355 block with 348 heads. Teh Privateer company stripped out the internals and replaced it with race parts. The engine specification is:

Ted Wenz crank,
Cosworth Spec Pistons, Cams and Valve Springs.
Large valves.
Individual throttle butterflies.
Titanium rods.
Ported and polished heads.
Freshly rebuilt, no miles.
480bhp and revs to 9400rpm.

We are replacing the ignition system with a modern direct system and the ECU is a Motec M800. Most components we are using are race engineered. We will also be using the traction control system on the Motec as well. Rev limiter will be reduced to 8,500 to ensure longevity of the engine so we may lose a few bhp. I'll be happy with anything over 450bhp. We'll have various ECU maps that I can change with a click of a button. Race (scary), Flames out back (for posing), Fast road etc

We will also be making a custom airbox for the engine. It currently has Carbon trumpets, but for the road we need filters. The bottom part of the carbon airbox will be the original airbox that was used on the Le Mans race car. The top part will be a carbon airbox part that was originally on Schumachers 1997 F1 race car that he drove in 3 races. I managed to buy it from the States from a well known collector. He originally sold the F1 engine ten years ago and the buyer didn't want the carbon box.

That just leaves the suspension system. For that I've got a Quantum racing adjustable suspension system. A friend of mine is the only other 348 owner who has it in the UK and he raves about it, so it's a proven item. It weights a lot less than the standard suspension system.

Should have the car all ready in the next couple of months, barring any unforeseen problems arising. The car will effectively be a road going race car. No idea if it will be drivable or even work, but if it does... it'll be awesome!!! Well... I hope so anyway. :)

A few pics.

Thanks for the kind words everyone

um, I really like that, and boy have you done some mods. What sort of money is a decent one go for?

Hard to say. You can pick them up for less than £25K these day.

The problem with the 348's is that they are between 16 to 20 years old and so 99% of them will need a lot of work done to them to make them as new. Things like suspension bushes replaced, dampers refurbed, engine ancillaries replaced or refurbished etc etc etc. The same goes for 355's and other Ferrari's as well.

Here's something I wrote up a while ago regarding 348 upgrades/mods/refurb. Gives you an idea of costs.

All costs exclude fitting and are for parts only.

For reliability:

* Refurb and upgrade alternator with better parts (£40, Parts £65 plus removal & fitting)
* Check alternator bracket and replace if cracked (£30)
* Refurb aircon motor fan in front luggage bay (£40 plus removal and fitting which is very easy)
* Replace OEM tensioners with Hill engineering tensioners (£220)
* Change all belts, cambelt, alternator, air-con. (£90 ??)
* Replace all hoses with silicon hoses (£120)
* Replace all other hoses ie: oil & fuel etc
* Check fuel hoses for cracks and replace if necessary (they can easily crack if over tightened - £220)
* Replace water pump (Optional. Never heard of a water pump going, but you can never be too careful as it shares the cambelt - Cost £650 new or £200 for the ebay rebuilt version)
* Check and recore/replace radiators as required (Cost £1,000 new or £200 for recored)
* Change radiator sensor (£9)
* Change oil temperature sensor (£15 for non Ferrari or £75 for Ferrari)
* Check the header tank (water tank) at the bottom for corrosion. Replace/repair as necessary. (Cost me £75 for a used one)
* Change engine oil to Redline 75W90NS (very good for the gearbox)
* Change every single fuse in the car (Cost £5)
* Put stabilant 22 or similar on every electrical contact (£25 plus time)

For performance:

First thing you need to do is put it on a rolling road or hub dyno and see how much power the car has. If it has significantly low power, then do a compression test. After you do all the things below, take it back to the same place and do the test again and then compare. I ended up witha significant increase of power of around 10%.

* Use NGK iridium spark plugs
* Replace OEM spark plug leads with Magnecors (£170)
* Do the cam timing (I got an extra 30bhp+ from just doing this)
* K & N air filter (£50)
* Ensure throttle cable is not too loose (doesn't cost anything to do)
* Remove OEM cats and replace with Hyperflows (£800 plus fitting)
* Change the 348 wheels for 355 magnesium or other 18" wheels (£750+)

For handling:

The 348 gets a lot of criticism for it's handling. The main problem is because most 348's don't have them refurbished or sorted out. It's very sensitive to change. To get the car at it's best, it's recommended to do the following:

* Refurb dampers (£60 plus vat plus removal and fitting cost) and change the rubber bits at the ends.
* Replace suspension bushes (Between £500 to £1,000 depending on wether you get OEM rubber or poly bushes - plus fitting and removing is a pain))
* Do a full geometry setup by someone who knows what they are doing (£400 plus £45 for a set of Hill Engineering shims)
* Balance tyres (£40)
* While your at it, have the wishbones powder coated if necessary (£40
* Front lip spoiler (supposed to aid high speed stability)

To enhance the driving experience:

* Get a Tubi, Capristo or X-OST exhaust system (Anywhere from £500 used to £2,000+)
* Carbon sports seats (£2,000)
* 360 Challenge steering wheel (£180)
* Carbon fiber bits for interior (£800 to £2,000+)
* Stripe - option from £350
* AP racing brakes (£1,800 - make sure they are proper colour!!!)

Other modification:

* Speed up the electric windows (£90 plus fitting from www.ferrariwindow.com)
* Start Engine button in centre consoole (£60 plus fitting)
* Carbon fibre interior bits (£800)
