As summer's arrived, I inevitably started considering taking one of the 'fun' cars out every now and then.

Next to the GS Spyder that is currently not exactly ready to use, I own an MGB (yes, I know, very different, and this topic is not about that specifically) that I was intending to sell once I'd bought the GS.
Now, not only me but also my gf found that it'd be nice to keep it anyway, as it's such a simple, elegant (first series...) enjoyable car that costs buttons to maintain and run. (I've probably spent less on it, including the cost of buying it, than I've already spent getting the GS on the road)
And having had it for a while, it comes with good memories.
On the other hand, it's one more car to keep running, and time is in short supply so I'm wondering every now and then if it makes sense to keep the two.

What's your experience/point of view on this?

At any one time, I tend to have:
  • luxury daily driver (currently Jaguar XJ)
  • one exotic (currently Stradale)
  • one classic (currently Triumph TR6)

The classic gets changed for something different every few years, I tend to keep the exotics a little longer.

They all get regular use, the TR6 has been great over the past week or so.

If I had more space I’d have more cars, as it is I’m full up. Would love to add a classic like an Alfa Spider. A V12 is also still on the list. All cars get used but the nice ones for sunny weather only of which we luckily have enough.

Generally, I like to have just one car, as a daily driver, as then I am very familiar with it, and my sunglasses are in the right cubby-hole, etc. Same for multiple houses, it's much easier if you are not wondering whether your double-breasted dinner jacket is in Antibes or Verbier.

But having said that....
Surely you have more than one DJ if you have more than one house?

I have had the luxury of more than one car/bike for longer than I can remember. Always a daily car and something for the weekend be it a Maserati or Kawasaki. That's my willy waved...

I'm sure some of the willy-wavers will be along soon to say how many they have and show how rich they are...
I am sure many will post their car collections (the point of the thread I think) but I am not sure the cars people drive / have in their garage is a good sign to measure wealth.

chap close to me has a Maclaren on the drive of his mothers council house, I doubt it will come up HPI clear.

It feels OK to me for people on a car forum to say what cars they have. I'm jealous, for sure, but it doesn't seem like willy-waving. Now when I see their watches, pools, etc, that's a different matter...
Agreed.

I’ve no time (8 watches, 7 fake) for shallow (2 Pools) nonsense about houses here there and everywhere (3). Sadly I only have 1 car but it is at least an unreliable brand and that fact is made up by pointing out I have a sauna, jacuzzi, large gym and a very, very large amount of debt.

Did I mention my extensive wine cellars

I've got five, but need to rationalise the dailys, but can't part with the Brera had it so long and just keeps on going. Might combine the Range Rover and XV into something else, so cutting down sort of.

If you combine the RR and XV by cutting them down and presumably welding the remaining front/back pieces together, they’ll look ridiculous.
Can I suggest u sell each independently Prior to cutting. ;)

When I was growing up, our family had a string of old cars which would now be called classics. Some came and went, some stuck around. There was always something wrong with each one at any one time and keeping up with insurance, MOT dates, servicing etc pre internet was troublesome. So much so, that I created a massive Excel spreadsheet before they were invented. It was an A1 sheet of paper divided into columns and rows with all the outstanding jobs and important dates. I pinned it to the garage wall.

Eventually the novelty wore off, the columns and rows filled up or were crossed out and it turned yellow. It was a salutary lesson in setting (my own) expectations.

I'm pretty sure my only double-breasted one is at the St Lucia house. All the others are single-breasted.

I have had more cars than I can remember motorcycles too but mainly from a lifetime of being in the Motortrade.
Said it before my most used vehicle now is my little Renault 4 so no willy waving from me.
Used daily and does everything I ask of a car and never complains often get waved at and people engaging in conversation.

must go faster

Have had 2 cars for the majority of my adult life, mainly as the one I loved was the more impractical and unreliable.
Truthfully, if I had more space, I’d more than likely have more cars, and then need more space again for more cars. I was rather chuffed with myself 3 years ago thinking I’d been cleverer than the average bear after deciding the ideal solution for me was a modern big boot, 4 door, daily petrol driver capable of 0-60 in sub 6 seconds that I would change every 2 years (enter the ghibli) combined with the long time owned love of my life classic.
3 years on and the entry level Maserati that was going to be my 2 year stepping stone has worked its way into my affections to the point that way more money has been lavished on her including repeated trips to the car spar (paint shop) to make her look a little younger. I find myself contemplating selling the long time love classic (lotus esprit turbo), probably as I’ve not driven her for 2 years, but am too afraid that I would instantly regret it and know that another esprit just wouldn’t be the same as her.
I have even convinced myself that the lotus needs an engine rebuild and making immaculate before selling and the ghibli must go before she hits 90k (who am I kidding on both counts).
Although I spend less time on eBay and Autotrader than I used to I still find myself looking at Bentley continentals, Aston Martin db9’s, Ferrari 456’s, Maserati Quattroporte Mk6 GTS, and 4.7 granturismo’s.

If you are attached to the little MG and you can keep it running then keep it. If it’s going to get thrown under a sheet and neglected then give it a better life and sell to someone who will drive and spoil it.

My own realisation is that at 43 years old I still think my cars have a personality and soul so any opinion I have must be nonsence.
Do whatever makes you happy, or in my case whatever the more dysfunctional side of your personality makes you do .
