Probably not what your after but from a personal perspective the best car I have had for comfort, ride, economy and power that ate the miles was my trusty Alfa 1.9 JTDm GT.

Virtually drove itself.

Total agree with you my Alfa GT JTDm was awesome. Would often do 50mpg. As I had it remapped it shifted as well.

Alfa GT is a good call, watch for rear suspension mounts and general ride as suspension wear is something to keep an eye on, but as fast comfortable mile munchers with some style they take some beating

My old range rover sailed through another MOT yesterday , it's a comfortable old bus that laughably has a sport mode on the gearbox, all it does is change the gears faster , doesn't go any faster, it is massive though, a fiat 500 was parked behind it at the mot station, looked like I was towing a lifeboat

Love my old Range Rover and as long as I don't do too many miles I can live with its thirst. It will be coming to Ireland with us but the costs will just increase as road tax is over €2k per year

Just got home from Belgium and back in just over 24 hours for 4 hours work.
The last slog pushing on at 140/160 kmph got her down to 35 MPG.

Ouch , the mustang was 2k year one but it was in the price of the car so I didn't actually have to take 2k in the post office , this year is £140

OK. It's almost certainly been asked before, and I doubt I'll get clarity but here goes:

Looks like I'll be hammering up and down to Nottingham rather more than I anticipated. It's only 125 miles each way but the traffic can be rubbish and we're looking at 2h30m each way. Without traffic. Thursday / Friday was 5.5h in the car. Add a trip to Luton today and it's more like 7 hours driving in 3 days.

Apart from anything else the fuel costs are distinctly unpleasant.

My target is still to be in an MC or Strad before August 2020.

If I'm honest I'm not going to do anything until I know what my new package (oooerr) is but I see a few options:

  1. Re-spray and fettle the GT and sell (roughly 18k) to clear the finance an buy something cheaper
  2. Plough money into the GT and run it into the ground.
  3. Anything?

Assuming go for 1) What do I replace the GT with? My personal fave currently is a Jag XF. Whatever suggested needs to be:
Fast (at least in a straight line)
Pretty imposing
Not so bad on the running costs
Comfortable.

QPV fits 1 and 2, and maybe 4
Audi perhaps?
Not massively keen on BMW or Mercs but...

I throw myself on the mercy of the forum.

TBH a Merc would be the ideal solution. MB are the only car manufacturer whose mpg claims more or less match the real world and generally they are higher than others. My missus has just bought a Merc A200d and what a 'pocket rocket' !... and she's getting over 60mpg out of it on a reasonable run. Fantastic economy for long journeys.

Just my thoughts, i wanted a slightly larger car for helping move house, as well as my new commute to work. 18 miles each way, instead of 4. Didnt want anything special, comfortable but not so nice that i couldnt throw **** in it for tip runs etc. I ended up with an Octavia Scout. Cost me £2k, with 162k miles on its 2L 8valve diesel. Its not amazing on fuel, but has cruise control, and 4wd, and the stuff iv had in it is amazing size wise. If you want to go BIG, then an ex taxi Superb is the way forward. Just my experience and 2p worth.

I have to say, to date the Jaaaaaag has been exemplary in nearly every respect. Sadly, if things pan out one way, I'll still need a motorway mile muncher and no matter how I crunch it, there seems little point in replacing it for (say) a QP or a Ghibli.

<sigh> :(

Nice one Andy.....you have done more miles in her in a year than Liz did in 4 I think. Great to hear she is still going.

It now does over 400 miles a week commute in and out of Dublin and will soon be getting another identity this time starting with 01-WX- once the revenue process the paperwork.

Must get round to washing it one day as I think the last wash it had was when Andy did it before I collected :as004:

I have to say my Jaguar has been one of the Best mile munchers I have had and now on 155,000 miles.
Apart from service work and putting a new A/C pump on last year she's doing well and still worth around what I paid for her here in France.

Two glitches with mine
  1. The brake pad sensor keeps firing. I am led to believe that this is due to a frayed cable.
  2. One of the courtesy lights keeps going on and off. @philw696 any thoughts?

Cheers
