Umm. Probably not. Just not me if that makes sense!

I’ve had a few friends say that, try one, and change their minds. The high/upright seating position and chair shape/adaptability also very good for people with lower back/pelvic problems. TDV8 will do 30mpg on a run

My XE never fell apart but the quality wasn't as good as the Germans but was a very lovely car to be in. The C Class I have now is a C250 which I can get just over 60k to the gallon on a motorway run and average at 53. Build is excellent and I've just had a B service at a specialist for £258 so not that bad cost wise compared to some. It's very torquey and pretty quick for what it is and weirdly it has a very deep growl when giving it some. Think it's because they call it a C250 AMG Sport line plus or something so wanted it to sound better than the standard car. I know you don't like BMW or Mercedes but I can highly recommend the C250 sport for the type of journey you are talking about plus it's rear whee drive unlike those sterile Audi's. XF though is a good choice as it big, comfortable and done its depreciation as you say.

I'd have to agree....an E Class is a classic mile muncher. Although the XJ was great. I'm a big fan of 211 Mercs I've had an E220 estate that was great but the 6 cylinder engines are better and preferred.

Depends if you want comfortable and bulletproof mechanicals or less so but a better sharper more interesting drive.

Audi's or Bimmer's do little for me.

Petrol or diesel?

Don't really care, but has to be well above 30mpg

Depends on your budget. My friend got a 2015 A4 2.0 tdi se (with a **** load of options) only 30k miles for £15k from Audi guildford back in July which I thought was an absolute bargain

Sounds like it, but I'm looking more like the £5k mark :) Disposable for a year.

I'd need more than 30! I get nearly that in the GT! Get the point about the comfort though, cheers

What year is that, Andy?

I suspect over my budget but....

Keep the GT and LPG it.
Keeps you in a Maserati, and there will always be a buyer for it in a couple of years time.

It's a 2013 so last of the older shape. I paid 12k for it with 50k on the clock from Mercedes last March....but get an older one and they are less obviously. They start around 6/7k maybe for the C220 but worth search for a C250 which get you 219 bhp. My XE was a 2015 car and loved it but the C250 is quicker, sound better, better put together and just as comfortable.

Do what I did then and go all in. High miles Skoda (take your pick based on size, trim level and fuel preference), drive it when you need to get from A to B and forget the rest. Service time is the best bit.

Option 3 buy something cheap and keep the Maser.

I did what you’re looking at doing for years. Then decided to run two cars. Something nice and a cheap snotter.

I’ve got a 2006 e-class estate at the moment. 130,000 miles great place to be on the motorway has everything you want does over 40mpg. Get the v6 diesel either 280 or 320, it’s the same engine and they don’t half go. Saloons are cheaper and post 2006 is better as it doesn’t have the electro-hydraulic brakes which can be a bit on off in traffic. £2k to £4K will find you in a nice car.

Option 3 is looking like a distinct possibility.

Skoda might work, all good Volvo suggestions as well.

Thanks for all the input, folks. Really helpful :)

I’m in option 3;
GS for high days and holidays, my £1.3k golf for everyday, had it over a year now, 22k Miles, had to do a couple of bits, if it goes ding I’ll get something else, allthough l am hankering for something a little more gutsy, it’s 2.0 but a little underpowered at times, certainly comfortable tho, mind SWMBO is looking for a mlc car, cabriolet of sorts.

I think I would sells the GT now if you want Stradale in the future. If it owes you 18k then prices are still dropping on the 4.2. Adding LPG must devalue the car surely and just doesn't seem right on a car like a GT. Can see the early cars under 20k in the new year maybe. But hey what do I know.

For a £5k mile muncher for 120 miles a day I’d be looking at a 5cyl diesel Volvo or an MB as suggested. Volvo mainly for seat comfort rather than economy. LPG is a complete waste of time, even on cars that came converted from the factory.
