There's always been dodgy MOT tests carried out. From your local 'friendly' tester to the 'downright dangerous'.
Is MOT fraud on the rise or are the DVSA getting better at catching the crooks?

Wouldn't want to be a tester anymore looking at the state many cars are in today seeing pictures posted by other testers.
Rust seems to be a real issue again especially on modern stuff.
Haven't tested since 2014 and one aspect of the trade I don't miss.

Massive profit maker though

You have to feel sorry for some garages too, I was having one of mine tested recently and there was lady in there with a Kia Rio of some great age. It just passed but had some pretty serious faults, the tester was trying to convince her to at least get some of them fixed as they could soon develop into something more dangerous. They also pointed out that the car hadn't been serviced in 4yrs.

She was quite rude and saying they were trying to rip her off and that it didn't need servicing as she'd only driven 3k miles in the last year. Poor guys, they are honest as the day is long and never suggest any work unless they feel it completely necessary. They are also always super busy so don't really need the extra work.

Does make you think about the death traps that will be cruising the streets if they extend it. My OCD means I have to have a no advisory pass everytime!

There's a lot of automotive stuff on social media and those guys from Walsall are certainly busy posting stuff.

I don’t know what the testing regs are in Canada but they’re were an awful lot of cars with knackered silencers, not something I’ve noticed that regularly here since the 80s

This guy made me laught at the time , MOT by text
He tested over 2400 vehicles in 4 months without a single fail , cars he did see, the tests lasted 7 to 11 minutes.
Absolute stupidity and greed there for sure.
As soon as the system became computerised and you had to log on and off using your smart card it was obvious that the Ministry would be keeping an eye on everything.
They know what everyone's pet hates are from incorrect number plates to rusty brake pipes.
I hated testing in the end especially when the customer used to watch and chew your ear.
I used to be a mechanic.
My mate is a mechanic and says she's all good.
I've just had her serviced etc ;)

there are 2 sides to the coin though and have come across a few dodgy mot garages trying to fail cars unfairly to screw customers over for work not required, in one case a mate of mine said would complain to DVSA, miraculously they said they had made a mistake and all good with a pass

Never once had anyone report me to the Ministry.
Had a few moaners but as they were not qualified motor engineers or a tester after a few words they get the repairs done.
It's only minimum standard to be achieved and some can't even do that.

clearly you were an honest tester, was just saying that there are also dodgy ones making stuff up to get work

I always remember when I started after questioning the ministry trainers they told me that I wouldn't agree with everything and certainly not be happy with some of the test but better to pass and advice was what they told me.
It's all about covering your backside.
