OK just been for its MOT and it's failed on the o/side front wheel bearing excessive play. With the wheel in the air it rocks on the hub . Can this be resolved by tightening the hub nut (I haven't taken the wheel off yet) or is this new bearing territory simple as?
If so what sort of damage are we talking?
Cheers
Ian.

Unfortunately not, they are a sealed unit.

They are about £500 for the part. It’s fairly simple to change on the front, a couple of hours. Rear is a bit more involved.

Knickers - OK thanks Zep. On a theory of 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' is it considered reasonable to only replace the o/s - or as a pair (n/s as well)?

I've never replaced wheel bearings in pairs. But might be worth checking the n/s as they tend to fail more frequently, it seems

1 ordered from Eurospares @ £517+ VAT. Booked into SB Engineering next week. I'll keep a close eye on the n/s now I know it's potentially in the zone.
As a fyi - my XC90 had a replacement n/s rear bearing at approx 60k miles under warranty. None of the others have been changed since and it's on 314k miles now!?! ...... there I've said it now .

I recently had a single hub changed due to failed ABS sensor so excessive play aside no issues with just doing one

@IanU the wheel bearing is an absolute doddle to replace yourself. There's around 16 bolts to undo, and five of them are to take the wheel off. However there's always one thats going to be a pain and strip, but invest in a can of WD40 and give them a good spray and they have a cuppa. As Zep says a couple of hours and you'll have it done.
