To be honest I would pull the diff and get it to a transmission specialist. They will strip it, renew the friction plates (Maserati don’t list them but they will either be available as a standard part or can be refurbished) and it will be good as new.

If you were to lock one of the rear wheels say on a 3200/4200 on a roller brake test it would scrap the internal diff plates in seconds!

Like I mentioned before..... a friend of mine who has the local MOT station unintentionally ruining a nice old Subaru Impreza diffs doing the same thing

A later court order, saw his insurance company paying out over 10k to put things right!

I need to find a transmission specialist. And probably speak with someone who knows the cars rather intimately, to ascertain it is possible to spilt the parts & either have them refurbed, or replaced.
I think a call to AV is on the cards...!

That call would be a very sensible. You definetly can split them, it was made by a man (or woman), so it can be fixed by one!

I am curious about this and hoping my mot place is wise to all of this. What would be the symptom if the garage had horsed the LSD? Would the drive just nto work of would it still drive ok just no LSD function? I am wondering if I would have noticed if this had been broken in the past?

You’d only smoke up one rear tyre leaving the mot station not both!

It’s all a bit nuanced with LSDs. If it’s not working you will loose traction on the inside wheel on accelerating out of corners. It will also introduce some understeer on corner entry as the unlocked wheels under engine braking or balanced throttle will allow the rear to turn more readily, highlighting a relative lack of grip at the front.

But you would need to be driving like your hair was on fire to notice it!

my hair burned off long ago :)

Is there a test for this to see if its working or not? I guess park one wheel on a slippy surface and see if the other one grips? I know if one wheel is on the ground it takes serious effort to rotate the free one and I always attributed this to the LSD doing some thing?

Exactly that. If you can turn the wheel with the other one locked, but it’s really hard, then it is working.

If the plates inside are worn or loose it would be easier to turn them independently.
