Monte Carlo or Bust...

DATE NOW CONFIRMED AS WEEKEND OF 14 APRIL 2012

Just watching old Top Gear and fiddling with Google Maps.

Le Havre to Monte Carlo is 736miles if you go to Grenoble and drive the famous Route Napoleon, very easily doable over 2 days, or even one day with the right level of commitment (i.e. our partners don't join us!). I picked Le Havre due to the overnight ferry option from Portsmouth, you arrive in France early morning, raring to go after a decent brekkie and shower. It's always my preferred route!

I have never been to Monaco and would like to go, probably too late this year, espeically with our Swiss Alps trip this month, but next spring... who fancies it? I'd be happy to do the leg work and find the places to go, just wondering who'd like to join me?

Register your interest please :)

EDIT. ITINERY AS OF 28 FEBRUARY

12th April: Depart Dover to Calais (tunnel at 08:20) via Reims (few photos), D396/996 (Dijon Road, highly recommended) to Beaune, stay in Mercure Beaune.

13th April: Depart Beaune 9:30am, autoroute to Grenoble, find N85 (Route Napoleon, world class driving road) do 20 miles and stop for lunch. Head for Nice, 190miles, arrive at Elysee Palace. Dinner in Nice.

14th April free day, tour Monte Carlo, dinner somewhere swanky, black tie at Casino, usual cheesy stuff.

15th April group splits. Half go to Millau Gorge, stay at Bourges and arrive Calais 16th April (Or Paris, or Reims), the other half go into Italy, stay at Lake Como, tour the mountain passes below 1500m then head home on the West side of France or into Germany, possibly Black Forest. Calais 18th April.

As a 4/5 day blatt there and back i'd be happy to Lewis , went there year b4 last , great scenery and place to cruise pose etc , Didn't go in the casino Royal last time so i owe myself another visit , Worth noting its relatively small principality, but very expensive to stay in 5 star that is , a mile outside and you can stay 5 star at half the price , definately interested

4-5 days is what I'm thinking Loz, plus staying a mile away sounds absolutely fine to halve costs! Overnight ferry on say Thursday or very early start from Calais, overnight Grenoble Friday night, drive the route Napoleon and arrive Monte Carlo for Saturday night action! Option then is whether to do a second night on the Riviera and get home in a day, or half way back through France again, maybe Dijon/Beaune? Either way, arrive UK for Monday evening.

Ah, us in our dicky bows again at the roulette table, happy days. Won some reasonable money at Blackjack the last 2 times I have been to Las Vegas, I think I have found my game :)

Would love to do that one day Newton, but going to be the busiest and most expensive time of the year. I'll do a proper tour package i think at some point.

I want this trip to be a way of blowing off the cobwebs after the winter and getting some miles on the cars. Spring comes early to the South of France, not sure when Grenoble can be navigated though... End of March seems likely, still be snow on the hils but roads will be clear.

I'll look at a provisional date later this week. Late March early April sound good? We'll see snow capped mountains in Grenoble but clear roads, then heading down to spring in Monaco!

Peter, fingers crossed you're back in something rapid by then - a nice 3200 going begging on the other thread... Anyway, the depths of winter are the time to buy!

Definitely up for it here, prefer not to do 700+ miles in a single day though! /wimp mode off
