Modern Classics magazine ceasing?

Just got my last issue it seems with a letter saying they are ceasing the mag. Seems a shame as one of my favourite mags and always a good read.

I guess an early casualty of the impending raft of doom to come?

Advertising revenue wasn’t great prior to COVID. Absolutely mullered by it, hence the pagination drop.
Was due to be sold but the deal collapsed at the last moment, two working days after the last issue was printed.
JJ and I are freelance now.

That is such a shame, especially as there is clearly a growing interest in modern classic cars. For me, new cars are becoming less and less relevant and my monthly subscription to Car is often unread, evo flicked through, and I stopped buying the occasional Autocar months ago. Perhaps Harry could help?! He brought the midas touch to Performance Car/Evo! There is surely a space for something like this?

Sorry to hear that Nathan and hope it works out OK for you. Maybe a better opportunity may come out of it all so good from bad.

Thanks for your work on the mag to date as it has been a pleasure to read your works over time.

Suspected as much with Nathan's less than subtle clue a few weeks back.

Sad to read (or not) of its passing.

Best of luck to the writers.

Sad news. Received the latest copy yesterday but no letter. Only car magazine I subscribe to and genuinely look forward to receiving it every month. Always gets me looking at eBay/autotrader as I am inspired.

All the very best @Nayf for the future and to your colleagues too.

I have very much enjoyed reading Modern Classics and your contributions in particular.

I should point out that you were responsible for me blind-bidding on my car at the ACA auction back in November 2018... you have a lot to answer for my boy.

Personally, just don't buy car magazines anymore.
The only exception would be at the airport before a long summer holiday so can read at the pool/beach.
Ten years ago used to probably buy 5 or 6 a month.
YouTube has taken their place mostly.

Thanks :)
When it was put under review I chose to go freelance (with the aim of still being involved in MC along with other projects). Then it was saved.
Then it wasn’t.

Thankyou for the kind comments. It’s a shame but on to the next challenge...

Really sorry to hear this news, Modern Classics, Auto Italian and Volksworld were the only mags I entertain out of a plethora of what is out there!! Best of luck to you Nathan, I'm sure you will find your way into something quite easily!!..... Stu.

Received my copy yesterday but didn’t realise it was going to be the last one. It was the only magazine I subscribed to a real shame and lots of good reading over the years.

Strangely I sold my V5 Toledo to a freelance journalist for Modern Classics who was going to do a feature on it later in the year. Something about buying a car with a tow bar for less than the cost of putting one on a merc.

Best wishes for the future Nayf.

Yes it is a great shame, had become one of my favourite magazines. Best of luck Nathan hope the freelancing goes really well.

We had just started advertising in there with promising results. Good rates as well.

Still we got in the 50th issue and the final issue for posterity!

Nothing else quite like it. Will miss it.

Bit gutted tbh. Really enjoyed the monthly issue dropping on my door mat! Brought back memories of getting my 2000 AD in the 80's! Tried other mags such as Evo etc but they were not really relevant in the same way as MC. All the best Nayf.

I agree. My Car subscription came free as a perk with my Bank account, but these days there is little to interest me.

it’s either a road test of the latest limited production Hypercar that’s over £1M but all sold anyway, or a group test of the latest electric or hybrid cars of a particular type such as city runarounds or SUV’s etc.

MC was far more interesting and relevant to me and I hope it (or something like it) resurfaces.

The Toledo only cost me £500 very cheap motoring :)

Had a brand new Toledo as a company car back in 2000.
Was an excellent car basically a VW Bora.
Only had the VW 1.9 Tdi engine and something like 110BHP but loads of torque to compensate.
Just can't believe we are talking 20 years ago.
