Meta: where have all the cheap ones gone?

You will know the cheap ones have all gone when @dickygrace starts having 4200 in his stock again, although I would expect Dicky to have the most garaged of queens as that is the market he is known for and aimed at.

We do sell the odd ‘garage queen’ such as the 90 Anniversary Spyder and the odd BiTurbo era car or 3200. However that’s not something we actively look to stock. Unused cars as we are all aware can have issues when they start being used, so we tend to search for cars that are used but not excessively so.
The reason we don’t sell 4200’s over the last 3 years or so, is simply the fact that we’ve not managed to find any. All our cars are inspected and need to attain a fully clean bill of health. As the ceiling for a 4200 (late car, good colour combo, low miles, spot on history, good clutch, passed inspection) at present is about £18k, I’ve not been offered a viable purchase to sell. I still believe a good 4200 (hen’s teeth) is fantastic ownership proposition, finding one, near impossible.

I don’t recall you having a 4200 Spyder in the last few years either, do they fall into the same category?

I have had two, most are listed at overinflated prices. But yes, it’s the same story and an even smaller number of cars as I’ll only sell >04MY cars.

I have a Renault 4 available for £10,000 if anyone interested :)
Far superior to a Marina.

Or a 2CV. Not saying that 2CVs are dogs, a couple of ropey old ponies maybe.

Chris Harris on Collecting Cars podcast reckons his 2CV is one of his best cars.

I would rather have the R4, and £10k for one may not be too far off @philw696 .

I know the whereabouts of a lovely late 2007/07 4200 ultra low miles one precious owner and an annual service every year since new. The owner won't sell though

If I'd bought it new and barely used it I wouldn't sell it either, couldn't face looking at the depreciation, if he leaves it where it is when we're all electric and the sound of a V8 is only something you hear on the way to a car show it'll start going up

2007 just before the banking crisis , imagine if he'd put all that money into old Ford Escorts

Unbelievable really , a mint maserati is worth half an escort

Agreed. However, I think at some point a mint Maserati could be worth the same as said Escort and more likely more. If someone gave me a choice now even at the same price I'd take the mint Maserati everytime.

Not sure I'd feel special getting in and sitting in said Escort or even looking at it thinking....wow....that is lovely. We are the winners if nobody else gets it.

You don't start up an Escort and go.....wow....what a sound

No you don't but their simplicity and an emotional attachment is the attraction , you don't have to get it serviced every year to make it worth something and there's a queue as soon as it's for sale

A neighbour had a K reg escort cosworth , not pampered , daily driver with 90k on it , parked it up for 10 years , got it running and mot'd but it wanted a lot of work to be mint

Put it on ebay and within hours somebody offered him 30k for it

I rarely post on here, but occasionally do a quick scan of the classifieds and it always shocks me to see the values that are put on these cars.

We have an absolutely immaculate facelift 4200 with just over 8000miles on the clock, its been garaged all its life and has a full annual service history.

The couple of specialists that have serviced it over the years all comment it is the best they have seen. If the top of the market is genuinely £18k there is no point selling them, I wonder if that is why so few are coming up? Will definitely be hanging on to ours, I don't see what else comes close at this level.

That’s why people don’t sell them, they’re worth more to the owner. Yours could buck the trend if only 8k miles, may be worth early £20k’s. Sounds like it’s been incredibly well looked after; albeit not driven much.

It is weird isn’t it... so much of the “average” stuff has climbed and climbed during Covid (people with too much time on their hands, bounce back loans, no travel expenses etc... ?) but i cant see much change in the value of our beloved 3200/4200s... I still can’t believe how much car you get for the money. Still struggling to come to terms with mine having to make way for a new GR Yaris but sadly the harsh economics are that I think my Clio V6, Subaru RB320 and R33 GTR will appreciate more... or at least more quickly. Don’t get me started on the old Ford Escorts for £30k plus phenomenon...

Funnily enough I was eyeing the granturismo up on your website a couple of weeks back.

I just can't quite convince myself that the granturismo @ £45 grand will feel like £25 grand more car than I currently have!

Autoshield have serviced the car for me in the past, but logistics of getting it to them in the last couple of years made it difficult, so they know it as well.

Blimey.....I thought mine was low at 15k miles for a 2007/07 4200. At 8k miles that is bonkers. Do you never use it? What year is it? Any pics?

There was a similarly low miles red one at DGs a few years back... I was tempted to swap the GS for it.

The prices over here have been rising slightly, Coupe CC cars with no issues are around $18-22k, a Coupe 6mt recently sold for $30k, and I haven't seen a 6mt Spyder for sale in almost 2 years. GS cars are about on par with reg. 4200's . But the number of cars on the market has dropped way down from 3 years ago when I was looking for my car.
Edit: mikeey-boiy, if you would video your entire car (all mechanical bits) for posterity, it would serve as a basis for future restorations, folks would be able to see how an original was put together. Just a thought...
