MC Shift Discs and Pads

Hi all,

I'm new here. Bought my first Maserati GT 18months ago. It was a 4.2 black with black interior, Skyhook and Bose. Loved it. Then made the mistake of test driving an MC Shift and it was all over. 3 months ago I managed to find a stunning 2010 MC Shift in Fuji Bianco with black leather and 34k miles on the clock. I bought without taking a second look and absolutely love it.

But.

Just taken it for a service and the brakes are worn. No sensor light on yet but Steve at SMDG near Dorking (seem very good) has said they should be replaced. He told me to brace myself before he let me know the cost. £650 per disc, plus £650 for the front pads. I couldn't believe it. I trust Steve when he says they need doing but is there any alternative parts for these or simply have to buy Maserati OEM?

P.S. it also has a clutch 70% worn and at £3k to replace including labour I'm weighing up leaving it for 6 months.

Hi Mac

Firstly forget the clutch 70% could have many thousand miles to go, the rule is drive them until they let go. Usually you get gear unavailable messages on the DIS when they start to let go.

Discs yes costly. but pads you should go with EBC Yellow stuff over the OEM (not as good as EBC) at a fraction of the cost, there are threads on here with reviews and comments etc...

The other option for Discs is to order the Formula Dynamics ones from the US as they are also a fair bit cheaper than the OEM parts.

PM me if you get stuck.

Is that Dyer3200's old car from AV engineering?

Hi Mac

Is that Dyer3200's old car from AV engineering?

I thought that at first, but it can't be as it had brand new disks fitted, I know, as picked up in the photos that they weren't the ones specified in the original spec, i.e, the grooved and wavy ones...and the add did state new brakes...

Yes I knew it had them fitted and that's why I asked in case someone had removed them!!!

Contigo, thanks very much for the help. Will order the EBC's right away. And will look at the option of discs from the states. Will let you know how I get on.

Thanks again!

Scuderia parts are doing a good deal on std discs at the moment (about £400 each).

If you can hold on there might be something interesting taking expressions of interest to in November and delivering in Jan.

Thanks for the tip . Will check out scuderia parts in the morning.

The warning lights aren't on yet so could probably hang on till November too?

I’d make sure you aren’t at risk. Depends on your mileage I reckon.

Quick update. Ordered a full set of discs this morning from Jason @ Scuderia parts, very helpful. Fronts were £395 and rears £215. Plus vat. Thanks for the tip Zep, saved me the better part of £1k.

Been on the EBC website looking at Yellow Stuff pads. only seems to be two choices 4.2 and 4.7. Nothing for the S. Anyone have any ideas if the pads are the same on both the 4.7 and 4.7 s MC Shift?

Rear brakes on the 4.7 are the same as the 4.2 and are relatively cheap. It is only the front discs for the 4.7 which are expensive.

If you are replacing both discs and pads then just keep using the old kit for now.

No worries. EBC Yellows make a huge difference to your braking and are so much better than OEM.

I didn’t like them on my GS, wooden feel, horrible **** on my wheels (I understand they have a lot of copper in them for heat dissipation which goes molten and sticks to your wheels). But each to their own. There are some other much better options IMO.

They're definitely a bit busy, however, you clean your car as often as I did so it was never an issue for me.

I'm sold. Ordered front and rears today, chap at EBC was very helpful. They should be here Monday. Hopefully get the car back Wednesday. Can't wait. The wife's s-max is seriously practical, but just doesn't cut it.
