Massive CO2 taxes introduced in France

In France in 2021, examples of CO2-based tax rates, from the new sliding scale for petrol cars, will be as follows:

133g/Km - €50pa
142g/Km - €2,000pa
151g/Km - €4,000pa
158g/Km - €6,000pa
163g/Km - €8,000pa
169g/Km - €10,000pa
through to
218g/Km and above - €29,070pa!!!

So obviously this will wipe out sales of anything other than small hatches, hybrids and EVs. It will only take one or two other European countries to introduce similar rules and the manufacturers will have no choice other than to stop production of anything interesting, based on petrol.

Given that my Granturismo Sport puts out 337g/Km, this must also surely start to effect the 2nd hand value? Do we all need to offload our cars before they are worthless? Thoughts?

If anything it will support values. The sales of new cars like this will plummet, meaning anyone who wants one will have to buy second hand.

Suspect they will be bought in another EU country and driven in France....the new MC20 is 262 on combined cycle and 215 on the extra high cycle

Are they the tax rates for newly registered cars from 2021 or is it a blanket thing that affects all vehicles no matter the age?

pretty sure this is only for new vehicles and it's already in place - the upper limit is increasing though in coming years. Italy etc also have the same tax but not nearly as high as France. there is also a tax for second hand cars in France over the threshold, but believe it's €1000 only, in addition the annual tax charge for owning a high emitting car is €160?

to be clear: the taxes are at point of purchase only - e.g you buy a used GranTurismo and pay the €1k then and only then. the annual charge though is for everyone

What chance (or time if probability is =100%) do you give to Rishi Sunak to raid on UK motorists ?

He already has ..... have you seen the price of petrol.

And that's before we get into congestion charges, road fund licences etc. etc. and the taxes applied to new cars.

A version is already in place in that you have to pay an additional £325 pa road tax for new cars costing >£40k as well as your CO2 related VED for 5 years from the second time the car is taxed.

I fear that this might be just the starters. I hope I am wrong.

I agree if this remains the case and these don't then apply to old cars. I am hopeful this stays the same in the UK as the current C02 rates max out at about £330 annual VED regardless of emissions on cars reg before 2006 on the basis that old cars are all the poorest in society can afford and if you live in the sticks, then public transport is not an option.

Don't get me started on French vehicle duties. I live there half the time but use UK reg cars - even the LHD Alfa Mito is UK reg. Up till about 2 years ago even the speed camera fines weren't followed up on UK reg cars, but are now and I'm a regular recipient. May change back after 31st Dec and end of transition, so here's hoping.

With the proliferation of electric and all new cars stuffed with joyless driver aids such as lane assist etc, I hope that the last of the normally aspirated big ICE engined cars with V8's or V12's and manual gearboxes will become the Holy Grail of petrolheads and they will be clamoring to get hold of them. I wonder how many new drivers pass their test on a manual these days and can parallel park without park assist and reverse round a corner without rear view cameras to help out?

It's a none event really as fleet average CO2 targets and the fines that apply to manufacturers' for non-compliance are already meaning that average CO2 is tumbling down. Sure high emission new cars will continue to be available in low volumes but they will be expensive and aimed at those who are prepared to pay the top supplement - think Ferrari F8/812 et al where each new car is quite a bit more expensive than the last but the market can bear it. Additionally these companies can make their market entry cars much more hybrid in approach so they are still affordable for the target market, the new sport series McLaren's are going down this route.

As for used cars of the sort of vintage that we talk about here then values are fine as long as parts remain available and LEZs don't stop us using them. Social impact might begin to bear for some mind.

It’s all going sh*t isn’t it. Cars are a huge part of culture and society. Something that puts a smile on lots of people’s faces.

And now it’s been ruined
