Exactly. (Although GT S not GTS, apparently)

Yes. yes OK...Its in the spacing of the letters...But it was still the forerunner to the later car.....Both meant to be a harder QP - They just dropped the Sport and moved the S closer...…..

Er, not sure exactly how close they put the 'S' to the 'GT'.

The website says that in the Automatica range the "Sport GT [4.2] was later on replaced by the Sport GT S [4.7]" and that in the 'Restyling' range the choices were "Quattroporte", "Quattroporte S" and "Quattroporte Sport GT S"

I'm not (just) being super pedantic, but trying to understand the range properly, as it seems very confusing for everybody. eg, on carcolours they offer this ridiculous list:

I have a QP V 4.7 GTS and follow the market quite closely - there are two 4.7GTS on the market a white one that has been up for sale every summer over the last 3 years (originally with Nuvola at 37k from memory) and it never sells and the infamous blue car "Knobby" as its known which I would get inspected as its has issues (or walk away) that will need to be factored into the price.

I chose a 4.7GTS as for me they are "stronger" cars compared to the 4.2's BUT there are only 60 or so in the UK so if you want a 4.7 you will have to be prepared to move fairly quickly as good cars are selling - with the last 2 low mileage selling before the pictures were even put online. Another route is to talk to specialist dealers such as Richard Grace cars or other forum Sponsors like Shilltech who also do car sales.

On the 4.2's you will have more choice but these come with the robotised gearbox which has a clutch as opposed to the automatic ZF gearbox with torque convertor in the 4.7. Some prefer the feel of the gearbox in the 4.2 and accept that clutch wear and costs are part of that package.

You have put up two versions of a classic (imho) the first step is decide which variant you want and go from there....

Is this really true about the 4.2gts?
I thought they were automatic too.

I am still a novice though.

I believe the 4.2 Sport GT S (a model year 2008 car only, just before the 2009 facelift) was exclusively built with the ZF auto. I think Devonboy was speaking about 4.2s in general above?

an Evo mag article from the time:

In any event, I’ve always wondered what the second ‘S’ stands for in Sport GT S ? Stradale ?
Or is it Sport G(ran) T(urismo) S(port) ? Which I wouldn’t put past the Italians !

Yes, I think all 4.2 GT S are ZF automatic.

My understanding is that:

All Duoselects are 4.2 and none of them are GT S.
The GT S options are:
  • Quattroporte Automatica Sport GT S 2007-2008 4.2 ZF gearbox
  • Quattroporte Automatica Sport GT S 2009-2012 4.7 ZF Gearbox ('restyling', usually called 'facelift')

I have the brochure for the 4.2 and it calls in a Sport GT S......So....Maserati clearly confused themselves with their own range.....The 4.7 brochure also clearly says QP GT S

There's no better feeling than pulling out to overtake, double-paddle down on a DS and it feels like a proper fast sports car. Pass the car in a shot, at the one-lane bridge leave the giant stranded at the riverside, race back to farm, and dream with my Uncle at fireside.....

The 2nd car is a GT S as there are several tell take signs. Black leather, red stitch, bolstered seats, 6 pot brembo, carbon, shaded exhaust tips and red calipers. Other indications which we cant see for sure, lower stance, on springs and red accents on emblems

They are both automatic via ZF auto boxes but one changes gear in a different manner to the other

this is a better summary - it’s the 4.2 Sport GT that has the robotised version.....as opposed to the 4.2 sport GT S which does not...how could I have got confused!

so meydream of finding Due Select with single rate springs (non-skyhook) is over, unless I want the ZF box.
