I thought clear coat only went on top of metallic two pac. Solid didn't normally have a clear coat.

Mine is two pack without a clear. But clear on top of base is pretty much the standard now, especially with water based paints. It’s the clear that gives the UV protection and hardness. Theres a bit of a continental divide the Americans generally use clear on top of everything

The old clear on metallic was to give a smooth finish. If you put metallic on thick enough to flow all the partial one up and you loose some of the the sparkle.

Water base paints are matt so require the lacquer to get the shine.

Both 2 pack flat and metallic are matt.

Also the base is water base but the lacquers are traditional solvent.

2 pack refers to the paint being a mix with a catalyst that creates a reaction to harden (like epoxy).

Conventional cellulose type paints work by evaporation of a solvent.

A two stage paint is base and clear

Conaero, you should pull the trigger on this. To me, the Bora is a brutally beautiful car, and with parts available again, they're not the pain to keep running that they once were. Ask me how I know. Years ago I was discussing mine with a tech that knew these well, and commented that my dream car was a Daytona. He was taken aback, and said that my Bora was a much better car than a Daytona, he had worked on both. I wish I still had it, but swore that if I ever got everything working at the same time, I would sell. Finally did, and did.
P.S. someone had fabbed a clear plexi air box for it, with that on, and the cover left off, you could see the Webers thru the rear window. Awesome!
