I chatted to a dealer friend yesterday (CEO of a big chain with circa 60 dealerships and 2000 staff). As I understand it, it’s illegal for them (or anyone) to collect or deliver a car sold now, but customers can pay deposits to reserve cars, for collection/delivery when the lock-down ends. So if you see a car you like, you can reserve it - but you will be buying sight unseen, so a risk if it’s a private sale on eBay (or similar).

That isn’t as I understand it. As they’ve got showrooms etc they’ve been asked to close due to lockdown. We are allowed to go to work (If we cannot work from home). If this is to hand over a car, using social distancing and anti bac the car etc, then that isn’t illegal. What is illegal is for someone to come and view a car, as it isn’t an essential journey, strangely unless they’re in the trade, as then, they’re going to work.

Interesting grey area there. What if a key worker has to buy a new car because of a fire (for example). Would it become essential, do you think? Assuming said key worker had no alternative means of transport.

I have no intention of testing this BTW!

I did say to the buyer he could have his deposit back if he was unhappy with the car. Tbh a £1250 Volvo 480 Turbo. He’s gonna take it. :)

There’s a strange propensity on this forum where people talk down the value of the cars they love. I’d be a bit miffed, if on my advert for selling a car, people where suggesting I should take half the asking price for it!

I’m going to stick my neck out and say it’s a difficult sell because the market is ultra small, not necessarily because of the price. When that one person crops up, they will buy it regardless of whether it’s £10k or £6k.

Just my theory!

I do agree with much of this except from the last part.

Mmmm......not sure someone will buy anything regardless of it being £6k or £10k. Did that statement come out right?

Yeah I've got mates who will only buy something if it's a bargain, only trouble is they never end up with something they actually want.

I can see the logic in that interpretation, and what is the case for the big dealerships may well be different to sole traders working from home (for example).
I know he has just 4 of his garages currently open, and this is purely for servicing/repair work to the vehicles of key workers.

Yeah, I think it reads as I meant it to!

I’m not saying someone will buy anything regardless of it being £6k or £10k!

I’m saying I don’t think it matters in this instance with these particular cars. If the OP hasn’t sold it, I’d say it’s because no one is looking, not because it’s too expensive.

I can see some of these large dealerships not making out the other side!

They should be okay. Currently the Govn (well, us taxpayers) are paying for the staff to have a holiday. All be it, one they have to spend at home.

Sorry to drag up an old thread but did you manage to sell the car ? I am in the same position as you, I should really think about selling my Manual 4200 as its comes across as a dead weight at the moment :( BUT I am going to ride this out as owning these great cars is a privilege and we shall all get through this CV nightmare.

First thing I am going to do when this is all over, go for a blast in the 4200 !

Having to sell your pride and joy for half its value is not a good option, agreed someone will get a bargain if you do but just think what this car means to you, I know what mine means to me

Hi Guys,

A drop in work due to our pal Covid-19 has meant that I've got to get rid of all of my non-essential vehicles. I've put it up on Pistonheads but i thought i'd try my luck here as well. Here it goes:

Maserati 4200 4.2 V8
73000 miles
This is a great example of a Maserati Coupe with the Ferrari/Maserati engine.
Rare Manual.
No issues, well over 2k spent on it over the last year, always looked after and stored in the garage or under it’s cover.

Full service history:
HR Owen Ferrari Maserati - London - New-2011
Autofficina Ferrari, Maserati and Lamborghini Specialist - Surrey - 2012-2014
Brookspeed Porsche - Eastleigh - 2015-2017
The Maserati Shed - Fareham - 2017
CL Services - Wantage - 2018
Tanc Barratt Italian Car Specialist - Ludlow - 2019

Clutch replaced at 50K

MOT until November

Great car and always gets compliments on it's condition.

Any questions or feedback welcome!

Aidan
