Was chatting to Mrs C as we drove down to Southampton today and the conversation has gone something along these lines:

My plan so far has been to upgrade the GT to a MC-Shift in 2020

I have a new role that will need me to drive to Nottingham 2+ times per month to be successful

The GT is a superb car, but it's not exactly cheap to run and I'm not sure that increasing this mileage is the best thing for it.

So a change prior to 2020 seems to be sensible. But I don't want to step out of the marque.

I find myself thinking:
Why not sell the GT (I guess it should be about £20k) and pick up a QPV (for about £15k) and use the difference to pay the running expenses. Then in about 18 months sell the QPV for peanuts and then buy the GT-S

I'm clearly mad, but am I *too* mad?

And does anyone want to
a) Buy my GT
b) Know any QP's for sale?

The running costs are the same for both, but over that time and mileage I’d expect the QP to depreciate more and be harder to sell. So I’d stick with what you have.

Oh I know the running costs are the same. The point is to use the difference in cash to pay for the running cost ;)

The *sensible* answer would be to sell the GT and buy something cheaper to run,....

Good luck selling it as I know the pain. You will have to drop the car to not far off trade to get the enquiries. Now is not a good time to sell.

An older QP will cost more to run than the GT that's for sure esp a duo select early model car....

<edited>Now I think about it why would a 56k (random Autotrader example) cost more to run than my 95k GT? I'd probably avoid a DS unless it's got a brand new clutch (which there is one on Autotrader now). Mrs C thinks that should could quite like a QP as well, so it may be that we would sell the 147 when I get a GTS

I know my GT is going to go cheap, but that's what I expected anyway

Keep the gTs. I don’t see an advantage to getting the QP- there isn’t likely to be much depreciation relatively now- and you will take a masssive haircut selling it then buying a QP then trying to sell that then buying an Mc Shift

Fair shout. We might not want to sell it....

I shall think on

Rent as & when required - if convenient. Wasted money but probably less so than chopping & changing Masers.

No nicer place to be on a long journey than a ZF QPV.

I'm doing 'wife maths' trying to persuade MrsMarkMas that we should sell my black 60,000-mile 2009 4.2 QPV and get a bordeaux/green/grey 30,000-mile 2011 4.7 QPV. The delta feels like about £20,000 but I have not properly looked into it yet...

Another vote for renting and you could set up a business account.

I get a Mondeo Auto for c £12.00 per day...ok thats based on three months rent, but deals can be had.

Plus when you want to sell the QP they seem to shift even slower than a GT.......If you want a GT S in the long term I would keep your GT until ready. You know your car and done stuff to it. Jump into a QP and you may have to start all over again.

Pete has a good idea about renting. It's what we do if we need a bigger car for a weekend. For the handful of times a year we need one, dropping a hundred quid is far cheaper than buying something and having to rein the bloody thing. This weekend we have a Nissan X-Trail.

If your company pays you £0.45/mile to use your own car, you might be as well to look at cheap renters. May not be that much more expensive.

I am doing this too - well not with MrsMarkMas in fact with nobody. but it is what I am contemplating. The ZFQPV is the best car I have ever been in and I have found my place

Thanks all

Comfort is definitely a factor here as well. I get 22p per mile so renting may well make some sense.

I shall think on
