Morning all,

This is my car for sale if any one on here is interested in some extra summer fun:

Bit on a conundrum with this car which I bought planning to enjoy driving in the summer and do some track days in - having done lots of work to it I fear it is too nice/valuable to really use for the latter and I'll end up either (a) crashing it or (b) driving like Miss Daisy!

Any questions, let me know.

Yes Andy - great handling cars and lovely, characterful engine in the 160! Still very much in two minds whether to keep it or not....

Lovely car. GLWS.

This must be one of the lowest depreciating cars out there. A 19 year old car with 60k miles at 25k. Can't imagine you lost much money on that one.

How much were they new in 2000 our of interest?

28995 before options I believe (not that there were many). They have gone up in recent years....I sold mine for 14k in 2009.

Great VFM as a new purchase and no disrespect to the seller but who in their right mind would buy a car like this for 25k?

I don't get it. Seems like an awful lot of money to me.

A Lotus fan or collector Dean. The Sport 160 is iconic in Lotus circles. The Elise saved Lotus, it's light, small more fun than most cars out their .....Add to the fact it's not expensive to run with that small engine and the move away from big engine cars the little Lotus makes sense in our changing world. MRK 1 Elise don't come up often and don't stick around in the classifieds for long which can't be said for our beloved V8/V12 cars. The amount of Vantages and Maserati that just aren't selling in the classifieds is scary. I so want a Vantage but I am thinking if buy one it will probably be the last V8 I buy and a keeper as selling cars like this just seem so hard these days.

It is strong money but S1 prices have headed North in recent years and this has had money spent in important areas such as the suspension being rebuilt.
I can't remember but did the 160 have the standard gearbox or short ratio like my 111s had?
Also I recall a good mod for the 160 was an Emerald ECU and associated remapping to tame the lumpiness of the hot cam.
I would probably still have mine if it wasn't for having a family, however looking back there was a few niggles also with mine that also made the decision easier.

Lotus Elise Sport 160
January 2003
Lotus are about to release an update to the Sport 160 ECU map. The kit will comprise a new throttle body and revised exhaust cam pulley plus a re-mapped ECU. It will offer improved drivability and better low down torque.
It is worth noting that although the Sport 160 cams are designed to run at the standard timing marks, checking and correction can often have a profound affect on the cars drivability and output.
Launch
The Sport 160 was launched on 1st February 2000. It features an improved Sport 135 head with new cams and ECU. The first 50 cars have a GEMs ECU, later cars have a EFI Technology ECU. The latter system is a bit more sophisticated than the GEMS unit and allows the engine to run more smoothly at low revs. These are easily identified since the GEMs unit lives in the engine bay, the EFI lives in the boot. A characteristic feature of the Sport 160 is the higher idel speed at 1100 to 1200rpm. This is to meet emmissions regulations at idle. The GEMS system equipped cars are more prone to cold stall.
The first 50 Sport 160 cars have undergone Single Vehicle type Approval (SVA) testing, and are factory built with catalytic converters and 'Sport' exhaust to produce 160PS @ 7000 rpm and 178Nm torque @ 5000 rpm. Subsequent cars are Whole Vehicle Type Approved (WVTA) and are factory built with catalytic onverters, 111S exhausts and dual intake air cleaner/muffler assemblies to produce approx. 150 PS. These cars may be readily converted to 160 PS specification by carrying out an intake airbox modification, and fitting the 'sport' exhaust. If the last four digits of your VIN are between 0601 and 0650, your car will be the SVA model, otherwise it will be WVTA. Lotus recommend that you keep the (modified) standard intake system and filter, but ensure that the intake trunking is routed to pick up the cold air supply from the LH intake vent in the body side.
Gearbox is standard Elise ratios with 3.94:1 final drive. It has the sports suspension set at 100/110 mm front/rear ride height, 5 hole sport anti-roll bar fitted (but no uniball rear toe links). The first 50 were under SVA approval and include a sports exhaust. All the Sport 160s including the type approved cars have a large bore tubular manifold. Latter cars were homologated and have the standard exhaust. All have a catalytic converter and cross-drilled brakes as standard.
In June 2000 Lotus announced two versions of this car, the Sport 160 and Sport 160S and also deleted the 111S version. The former doesn't have the sports suspension, category 1 alarm or radio fitting kit as standard equipment. The SVA VINs ran from 0601 to 0650 and WVTA from 0651 onward. After VIN 1645 the sports suspension and seats became optional items.
The wheels are grey 'Race' wheels in 6" + 8" width with PZero tyres. These are five spoke with the rears being 17" diameter. It was originally available only in two new colours, 'scandal green' and 'metallic black' (which is not charged at metallic rate), though the full colour range has recently been made available. It costs £28,995 on the road. Cosmetic changes also include a new raised spoiler and hybrid seats. The rear spoiler is simply a 111S type raised on sculpted spacers.
The engine idles roughly and has less torque below 2500rpm than the standard car. A 190bhp engine upgrade kit was made available in July 2000.

Indeed fellas all good points! Personally I love it and took the chance to buy it having wanted one for a long time and having seen the prices of these rise and rise over the years. If it wasn't for the tracking idea I would probably keep it - in fact I still might anyway! Drove it today and it was just lovely, open top motoring. The 160 power makes it nice and swift on the road and I actually prefer the standard gearing on mine (some people change to 111s gearbox). The hot cam is also a very big draw for me - I just love that burble at idle! Another thing that you notice coming from more modern stuff is the lightness which you just don't get today - it is superbly nimble and responsive and this makes driving it even sedately a real pleasure. Oh course not everyone quite gets the Elise thing and so I can understand people thinking that they are not worth what they are going for but then I can't quite get my head around 80's Ford prices now either!

If I could 'like' that twice, I would!

From a fellow Lotus owner (Exige V6).

These are under rated cars that deliver purity and driving Nirvana, regardless of your budget

Afternoon all,

A short update on my car - due to a recent knee op that has not gone well it has been put up for sale again if anyone may be interested. I can get in it (with the roof off!) and drive it but after 20 mins it becomes pretty painful so sense needs to prevail....
